JUBA— South Sudan’s Vice President for Economic Cluster, Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel, has urged the United States to reconsider its recent decision to revoke all visas issued to South Sudanese passport holders.
In a statement seen by Sudans Post on Tuesday, VP Bol said the ban has caused significant concern and hardship among innocent South Sudanese nationals.
“South Sudan’s government regrets the incident and respectfully urges the United States government to revoke its recent decision to cancel all visas issued to South Sudanese passport holders,” Bol said in a statement issued on Tuesday.
“This sweeping measure has caused profound concern and hardship among innocent South Sudanese citizens, who have abided by international norms and respected U.S. immigration laws,” he added.
Bol reaffirmed the government’s readiness to work amicably with the US to resolve the matter relating to the deportation of Mr. Kinitu Makula, a Congolese national also known as Nimeri Garang.
“The Government of South Sudan, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MFA) and the Department of Immigration, remains steadfast in working amicably to resolve the matter relating to the deportation of Mr. Kinitu Makula, a Congolese national also known as Nimeri Garang,” he explained.
“Which regrettably resulted in the refusal of South Sudanese immigration officials to grant the deportee admission despite the agreement of the government of South Sudan through its Embassy in Washington, D.C., which issued the Emergency Travel Document.”
He revealed that after learning about the situation, his office fully supported the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in its effort to resolve the current situation between the two countries.
“It stands ready to assist in any capacity necessary to ensure the restoration of diplomatic relations and, more importantly, to facilitate the safe and dignified return of all deported citizens.”
He disclosed that his office provided logistical support in ensuring the safety and welfare of the people affected.
He cited that the leadership under President Salva Kiir Mayardit recognizes the gravity of the situation and affirms its unwavering commitment to engaging constructively with the United States in the spirit of diplomacy and mutual respect.
He said this move aimed to repair and strengthen the bilateral relationship for the benefit of both nations and their people.
