In an Easter message issued on Friday, April 3, Kiir called on citizens to embrace unity, reconciliation, and faith at a time when the country faces renewed insecurity and deepening economic hardship.
“As we mark this sacred season of Easter, I extend to all Christians within South Sudan and across the globe my warmest greetings,” Kiir said, describing the period as one of “reflection, sacrifice, and renewal.”
He added that the message of Christ’s resurrection carries significance for South Sudan’s own journey through conflict and instability.
“Just as Jesus Christ had endured pain and rose again in glory, so too shall South Sudan rise from the trials,” Kiir said. “Though the road ahead may at times seem rocky, I remain confident that with unity, patience, and faith in God, we will overcome.”
The president’s message comes against the backdrop of continued insecurity in parts of the country, particularly in northern Jonglei, where sporadic clashes between government forces and armed groups have raised fears of renewed violence. The fragile security situation has also been underscored by a string of deadly incidents in recent weeks.
In Central Equatoria State, more than 70 civilians were killed in Jebel Iraq, a mining area on the outskirts of Juba, in an attack that shocked the nation, with no armed group claiming responsibility.
The incident came less than a month after another mass killing in Abiemnom County in the Ruweng Administrative Area, where at least 213 people were reported killed by suspected armed youths from neighbouring Unity State.
These developments have strained efforts to consolidate peace under the 2018 revitalised agreement, with critics warning that continued violence risks undermining public confidence in the transition.
Kiir, however, used his Easter address to call for forgiveness and collective responsibility in overcoming divisions.
“During this Holy season, I call upon all South Sudanese to renew our commitment to peace, reconciliation, and unity,” he said. “Let us forgive one another, support one another, and work hand in hand to build a country that reflects the dignity and strength of its people.”
Beyond security concerns, South Sudan is also grappling with a worsening economic crisis marked by rising prices, inflation, and a persistent shortage of the South Sudanese pound. The economic strain has compounded the hardships faced by ordinary citizens, many of whom continue to struggle with the high cost of living.
Despite these challenges, Kiir maintained that the country is already on a path toward recovery, urging citizens to remain steadfast. “This is not just a promise; it is a path we are already walking together,” he said.
