SPLM ‘has right to leave’ elected lawmakers out of reconstituted parliament – Peter Lam Both

JUBA – The spokesman of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) faction Peter Lam Both has lashed out at lawmakers who are complaining that they were left out of parliament despite being elected during the 2010 elections saying the ruling party has the right to leave anyone of them outside the reconstituted parliament.

Lam who was speaking during an interview with Radio Miraya said they are operating under the revitalized peace agreement which provides for the reconstitution of the national transitional legislation assembly.

“The law under which we are operating is the revitalized agreement on the resolution of conflict in South Sudan. The R-ARCSS calls for reconstitution of the assembly meaning you have to dissolve the assembly when you dissolve the assembly there are no more criteria of elected MP before,” Lam stated.

“The SPLM actually has the right to leave all the elected MPs out if it had wanted to, but we had wanted to give them the priority to see if they have been performing in the interest of the SPLM and the interest of the people of South Sudan, so there is nothing called elected MP after this once the assembly was dissolved on May 8th. It means that there is no more election as criteria for somebody to come back,” he added.

He added: “So, anyone who claims to have come back because they were elected in 2010 is a mistake and they all know that.”
