RUMBEK – South Sudan’s main armed opposition, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO), led by First Vice President Riek Machar Teny, has appointed a new secretary for the movement in Lakes State.

Susan Amel Madut has been named the interim state secretary, replacing Alek Malaak, who had served since the party moved its offices to Juba in 2020.

The decision was made during a meeting of the SPLM-IO State Liberation Council (SLC) held in Rumbek, the state capital.

The meeting was chaired by State Chairperson Isaiah Akol Mathiang and attended by key party leaders, including representatives from the Youth League, Women’s League, Veteran League, and parliamentary and executive caucuses.

The SLC members discussed the performance of the outgoing State Secretary and the party’s overall progress in the state over the past few years.

After deliberations, they voted to remove Alek Malaak Atem and appoint Susan Amel Madut as her successor.
