SPLM-IO boycott of parliamentary sittings justifiable, says J1 critic

JUBA — South Sudan’s outspoken activist and fierce critic of President Salva Kiir Mayardit has said that the boycott of parliamentary sittings by SPLM-IO is in line with the revitalized peace agreement.

Late last month, opposition lawmakers from the main armed opposition group walked out of a parliamentary sitting to protest what they said was “manipulation” of bills by the ruling SPLM majority MPs.

They reiterated last week that they would continue to boycott sittings until when the dispute surrounding bills are resolved.

In a statement yesterday, the presidency said Kiir has called for a meeting with Machar, but directed the parliament to continue with its business despite the opposition boycott.

In a statement this afternoon, activist Wani Michael who was a member of the National Constitutional Amendment Committee (NCAC) before his resignation last year said the SPLM-IO’s decision to pull out of parliament in light of the violations was justified.

“SPLM-IO MPs boycotting the sitting is RIGHT and in-line with the Revitalize Peace Agreement because Parliament can’t substantially change any provision or bill drafted by NCAC. Unless, it is the same committee that accepted to such changes,” he said.

“It is very disappointing to hear what the SPLM SG said that NCAC shouldn’t purport to be laws-making body. The committee got its mandate and powers from the same Peace Agreement they keep referring to every single day but can’t understand it’s own content,” Michael added.
