JUBA — South Sudan’s main armed opposition group group, SPLM-IO, has disowned a senior opposition commander who joined de facto SPLM-IO leader Duer Tur Duer yesterday along with hundreds of people in the Sudanese capital Khartoum.
General Makem Aguer Gorong read a statement to hundreds of followers to announce his decision along with the followers to join Duer Tut Duer who removed Dr. Riek Machar Teny as leader of the SPLM-IO before declaring himself as an interim SPLM-IO leader in June.
Speaking to Sudans Post this afternoon, Dut Majokdit, a member of the SPLM-IO National Liberation Council (NLC), said he was not aware of any opposition members from Bahr el Ghazal who joined Duer and said Brigadier General Makem Aguer was an active SPLA-IO commander before his resignation from the main armed opposition group last year.
“Brigadier General Makem Aguer was active in the SPLA-IO but he resigned last year from the SPLM-IO. He just joined Duer Tut, the self-proclaimed chairman of SPLM-IO, with only four members who resigned with him last year,” Majongdit said.
He further said Duer Tut has not been endorsed by anyone to be the SPLM-IO chairman and that group remains firm under the leadership of First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny.
“SPLM/SPLA-IO leadership is under His Excellency Dr. Riek Machar Teny and there is no any other SPLM-IO that General Makem Aguer claims to declared his allegiance to,” he said.
“Duer Tut is just a mere SPLM-IO member and former governor of the defunct SPLM-IO Sobat state,” he said.
