JUBA – A prominent lawmaker representing the main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) in the Central Equatoria State parliament has resigned citing manipulation of parliamentary rules by the leadership of the law-making institution.

In a resignation seen by Sudans Post yesterday, Dabe Francis Elisama Murye who was also the SPLM-IO Chief Whip in the state parliament expressed his frustration with the current state of affairs in the parliament.

“Parliament is an Arm of Government that Discharges its Legislative, Oversight and Representative Responsibilities on the foundation of Democratic Principles and Constitutionalism,” he said.

“However, working in unelected Parliament whose leadership survives on manipulations of its rules of procedures and breach of laws, is difficult and unbearable as a law maker. It’s therefore my Moral and Constitutional Responsibility to tender my resignation,” he added.

Murye’s resignation comes amidst growing concerns about the legitimacy and effectiveness of the transitional parliament, which has been plagued by internal divisions and a lack of progress on key issues.

Elisama expressed his gratitude to the SPLM-IO leadership for the opportunity to serve and acknowledged the support he received from the group’s leadership.

He also highlighted his achievements during his two-year tenure as Chief Whip, emphasizing his dedication to mentoring members and ensuring the party’s effective participation in parliamentary proceedings.

“I have undoubtedly discharged my duties consciously and diligently with dignity and integrity,” he said.

“I have mentored members with capacities to actively and meaningfully participate in the day-to-day business of the assembly, and I have assurance that no significant leadership gap will ever arise as a result of this decision,” he added.
