SPLM-IO pushes leadership conference to December – spokesman

JUBA – South Sudan’s main armed opposition group, SPLM-IO, has postponed its planned national leadership conference which was scheduled for November 23, to the first week of December, 2020, according to an opposition media official.
Last week, a senior opposition official told Sudans Post that the group would convene from November 23, to November 27, to discuss the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement and leadership issues.
The senior opposition official announced that meeting following the defection of the group’s secretary-general Tingo Peter from the main armed opposition group who accused Machar of leadership shortcomings.
In a statement on Monday, James Gatdet Dak, the press secretary at the office of First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny said the meeting has been postponed until the first week of December.
“SPLM/SPLA (IO) wider leadership conference is rescheduled to take place in the first week of December, 2020,” Gatdet wrote.
“Hopefully, Upper Nile state governor shall have been appointed before then, the states governments formed, and the national legislature reconstituted,” he added.
He further said the decision to postpone the important was reached during a leadership meeting on Sunday in which “the resignation of the [Secretary-General] was also discussed.”
