JUBA – The representatives of AUMISS, UNMISS, AU, IGAD, and RJMEC have called on the main opposition group Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM-IO) to reverse its decision of suspending its participation in the various security mechanisms.

On 22 March 2022, SPLA-IO suspended its participation, temporarily, in the joint peace bodies following a series of attacks on its positions in both Unity and Upper Nile states by forces belonging or allied to South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF).

In a statement issued on Friday by the heads of the African Union Mission in South Sudan (AUMISS) United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) encouraged the SPLM-IO to rescind its suspension of participation in the agreement institutions.

“It encouraged the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army in Opposition (SPLM/A-IO) to rescind its suspension of participation in the Agreement institutions and mechanisms, including RJMEC and CTSAMVM,” said a statement seen by Dawn Newspaper on Friday.

The high delegations urged President Kiir and his deputy Dr. Machar to fulfill their commitments in order to demonstrate to the nation their true desire for peace.

“The delegation underlined the importance for the members of the Presidency to recommit to the full implementation of the 2018 Peace Agreement, and urged them to fulfill their commitments in order to demonstrate to the nation their true desire for peace,” it said.

The delegations encouraged President Kiir and Dr. Machar to uphold dialogue and improve the communication between and among members of the Presidency.

“It welcomed their preparedness and willingness to meet and discuss their differences in the implementation of the Agreement. The delegation encouraged them to uphold dialogue and improve the communication between and among members of the Presidency,” it said.
