JUBA – The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) parliamentary caucus has declared a dramatic vote of no confidence against the Speaker of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly, Jemma Nunu Kumba.

The decision was made during a high-level meeting on Tuesday chaired by President Salva Kiir Mayardit, who also leads the ruling party.

In a statement released Tuesday, the SPLM said members met to discuss “internal matters about the administration and management of the parliament.”

“The Caucus members unanimously declared a vote of ‘No Confidence’ in Rt. Hon. Speaker of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA), Rt. Hon. Cde. Jemma Nunu Kumba,” it added.

The statement did not explain the reasons behind the decision, but the move signals growing tension within the leadership of the August House.

Following the vote, MPs are now waiting for the party’s top leadership to name a new Speaker.

“As a result, the MPs are waiting for the nomination of a new August House Speaker by the SPLM high echelon leadership,” the statement said.

The unexpected decision could reshape the leadership of parliament and deepen political debate within the ruling party.

Nunu Kumba (born 15 June 1966) is a South Sudanese politician and the current Speaker of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly since August 2021.

She is the first woman to preside over South Sudan’s national legislature.

Kumba has served in several high-profile government and party roles, including Governor of Western Equatoria (2008–2010), Minister of Housing, Physical Planning and Environment (2010–2013).

Minister of Electricity, Dams, Irrigation and Water Resources (2013–2015), Minister of Gender, Child and Social Welfare (2015).

She also served as the Minister of Wildlife Conservation and Tourism (2015–2019) and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs (2019–2021).

She was also appointed Deputy Secretary-General of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) in 2015.
