JUBA – South Sudan’s army said on Monday it had launched an attack on the hideout of a comedian-turned-rebel leader, killing two fighters from his group, in the eastern Equatoria region.

The South Sudan Defense Forces (SSPDF) said it was pursuing Philip Omon Batilimeo, known by his stage name Feel Free, after a “surprise attack” on his location on Saturday.

Feel Free formed the People’s Freedom Movement (PFM) in April, saying it aimed to liberate citizens from oppression.

The government did not comment on the group’s claims, but today’s announcement by the SSPDF is acknowledgment of the rebellion.

“On June 1st, 2024, at 5PM, our mobile infantry unit from the 7th Infantry Brigade received actionable intelligence and launched a surprise attack on Feel Free’s hideout,” said army spokesperson Major General Lul Ruai Koang in a statement extended to Sudans Post.

The statement said the clash resulted in the deaths of two PFM fighters, while Feel Free and two bodyguards narrowly escaped.

“Our units are in hot pursuit with the aim of either neutralizing the high-value target or arresting him to face justice,” Ruai added.
