JUBA — A soldier of the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) fatally shot a fellow soldier after a dispute regarding alcohol at Giada Military Barracks, west of Juba town, on Sunday, according to the army.

Maj. Gen. Lul Ruai Koang, SSPDF spokesperson, said the incident occurred at 5:59 PM on Sunday at Suk Haradeb in Giada Military Barracks.

Koang explained that a soldier, identified as PVT. Akol Agang Kuol, opened fire on his colleague with whom he had a disagreement over a drink, killing him instantly and injuring three others.

“This message serves to inform our own rank & file and the members of the public at large that small arms fire heard at Suk Haradeb, at Giada Military Barracks, west of Juba Town, was not politically motivated,” Koang said in a press statement released on Monday.

He asked Juba residents to remain calm and continue with their daily activities, stating that the shooting was not politically motivated.

“On April 6th, 2025, at 5:59PM, an SSPDF soldier, identified as PVT. Akol Agang Kuol, opened fire on a colleague he differed with over a drink, killing him instantly. Three more servicemen were shot and wounded in crossfire by the same rogue soldier,” he said.

“Responding to hostile fire, the culprit’s own colleagues and soldiers from Special Forces returned effective fire, which resulted in him getting gunshot wounds.”

He stated that the wounded were quickly transported to Juba Military Hospital for treatment and that the perpetrator will be treated under armed guard. Following that, he will be arraigned before a competent District Military Court Martial.
