Sudan warned against referring Halayeb dispute with Egypt to UN Security Council

CAIRO – The Sudanese government has been warned by a Egyptian organization against referring the dispute in the Halayeb Triangle which include Shalateen to the United Nations Security Council days after the country’s leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan announced that he was planning to restore sovereignty over disputed areas with Egypt and South Sudan.

Last week, al-Burhan threatened to restore Sudanese sovereignty over disputed areas with South Sudan and Egypt during a address to members of Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) at Wadi Seyedana military barrack in Khartoum’s Omdurman locality.

Since then, no public Egyptian response has been made, but South Sudan information minister and government spokesman Michael Makuei Lueth described al-Burhan’s statement as political which he said does not need government response.

In Egypt, the spokesman of the Organization for Justice and Development Zidan al-Qinai deplored al-Burhan’s remarks on Halayeb reiterating Egyptian ownership over the two coastal areas saying that any deployment of Sudanese troops would trigger tensions between the two neighboring countries.

“Sudan is here warned against transferring the Halayeb and Shalateen file to the UN Security Council, especially since Sudan requested Washington’s support with the file after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s visit,” al-Qinai said.
