According to Twic County Police Inspector Atem Deng Atem, the gang cut their way into the shop using knives before stealing cash and other belongings on Wednesday night.
“The criminals broke into the shop of a Sudanese trader identified as Musa Sadik and took more than three million pounds, along with a bag belonging to a visitor who was sleeping inside with him,” Deng said.
He added that the robbery occurred during heavy rain, making it easier for the criminals to carry out the act unnoticed.
“We are working hard to track them down, and we call upon members of the community to cooperate with us. Anyone who notices a person with a head injury should report immediately, since the trader managed to fight back and injure some of the attackers before they escaped,” he stated.
In a related incident, authorities in Aweil South County in South Sudan’s Northern Bahr el Ghazal State reported that on Thursday night, a group of gangsters broke into the home of a pregnant woman in Malek-Alel. The attackers attempted to loot the house, but when the woman resisted, they allegedly kicked her in the stomach.
County Commissioner Luka Thel Thel said the victim is now receiving treatment at Aweil Town Hospital, and several suspects have already been arrested.
“We have arrested ten young men accused of breaking into the house of the pregnant woman and assaulting her as she tried to resist the robbery,” Thel explained. “The woman is hospitalized, and the suspects will be arraigned in court so that justice can be served.”
The commissioner noted that despite increased police patrols in the county, such incidents continue to recur. He urged the public to support law enforcement agencies in cracking down on criminal gangs.
Analysts attribute the rise in robberies to worsening economic conditions, compounded by the absence of industries to absorb unemployed youth.
It remains unclear how the central government plans to address the situation to reduce such crimes and create conditions for sustainable development.
