KUAJOK – Authorities in Tonj South County in South Sudan’s Warrap State have intensified security measures, including the full mobilisation of police personnel, in response to a surge in killings and rising insecurity across the region.
The directive follows recent violent incidents that have left dozens dead, deepening concerns over deteriorating security conditions in parts of the state.
County officials have ordered all active police officers to report for duty as part of efforts to strengthen surveillance, improve response times, and contain further escalation of violence.
Tonj South County Commissioner Gordon Makuer Tiau presided over a police parade earlier this week, where he emphasised the need for heightened vigilance and coordinated action among security forces.
Addressing officers on Monday, Commissioner Makuer urged them to maintain round-the-clock readiness and strengthen joint patrols in collaboration with local communities.
“Stronger security measures must be maintained day and night amid rising tensions in the town. Through coordinated patrols, rapid response, and close cooperation between security forces and the community, calm can be restored,” he said.
He acknowledged the recurring nature of violent incidents in the area, noting that despite ongoing efforts by security forces, insecurity continues to persist, requiring more proactive measures.
“The security of our people cannot wait for better circumstances or personal interests. I urge you to work day and night as one team to protect lives and property,” Makuer added.
He further called on the public to support security agencies, stressing that community cooperation is essential in restoring lasting peace.
“The public must also trust and support you so that together we can build peace,” he said.
Tonj South County Police Commissioner Bol Kuchmol reaffirmed the readiness of the police force to support the county leadership in protecting civilians and maintaining order.
Meanwhile, insecurity continues to affect other parts of Warrap State.
In a separate incident on Thursday, two young men were shot and seriously wounded by unidentified attackers while fishing along Maker River in Gogrial East County.
According to Major General Madut Madnut Deng, the police director in Gogrial East County, the attack occurred on Monday when the victims were engaged in fishing activities.
“The incident occurred at Maker River. The two young men were shot by unknown assailants while fishing,” he confirmed.
The victims were identified as 19-year-old Manut Kuol Door and 20-year-old Madhel Arol. Both are currently receiving treatment at Majak-Nyuom Health Facility.
The latest incidents highlight ongoing insecurity challenges in Warrap State, despite efforts by authorities to implement national and state-level security directives aimed at restoring peace.
However, concerns persist over the continued circulation of illegal firearms, with critics alleging that weapons are still being smuggled into communities through neighbouring states, fueling recurring violence.
Security observers warn that unless the flow of illicit arms is addressed and local enforcement strengthened, stability in the region may remain fragile.
