JUBA – The Catholic Church in South Sudan will on Saturday welcome His Eminence Michael Cardinal Czerny, Prefect of the Dicastery for Integral Human Development at the Vatican.

“Cardinal Czerny is expected to arrive at Juba International Airport by 9:55 am,” stated Father John Gbemboyo, Social Communication Coordinator for the South Sudan Catholic Bishops’ Conference.

His visit coincides with the first anniversary of Pope Francis’ historic ecumenical pilgrimage to South Sudan in February 2023, aiming to promote peace and unity in the young nation.

Upon arrival, Cardinal Czerny will participate in a Solemn Holy Mass at St. Theresa Cathedral in Juba, presided over by Archbishop Stephen Ameyu, commemorating the Pope’s visit.

On Sunday, he will again preside over a mass at the same cathedral, followed by meetings with President Salva Kiir Mayardit and the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Albino Akol on Monday.

A press conference at the Vatican Embassy in Juba will follow the meetings, offering an opportunity for Cardinal Czerny to share insights on his visit and the Dicastery’s work.

The Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development focuses on issues like human rights, health, justice, peace, and environmental protection.

Father Gbemboyo said the Cardinal’s visit reflects the Catholic Church’s commitment to these crucial issues in South Sudan, a country facing ongoing challenges related to conflict, displacement, and humanitarian needs.

Cardinal Czerny is also expected to travel to Malakal, visiting internally displaced persons and refugees from Sudan. Details of his further activities and engagements are yet to be announced.
