BENTIU – At least two senior South Sudan army and police officers were wounded on Monday following hours of fighting with the main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO) in Unity State.

SPLA-IO commanders and eyewitnesses earlier today told Sudans Post that their base came under attack from the SSPDF in northern Unity State.

SPLA-IO Division 4A commander Maj. Gen. John Turuk Khor accused the governor of ordering the assault on their base.

But speaking to Sudans Post this evening, Unity State minister of information and communication David Gai Jijor denied that the army attacked the SPLA-IO base.

Instead, he claimed that SPLA-IO forces ambushed a convoy belonging to Governor Nguen Manytuil, resulting in the injury of two senior officers.

“I’m saying that what happened this afternoon is not really a fight; it is an ambush on His Excellency the Governor, Dr. Joseph, who was touring the areas in some part of Unity State, specifically Rubkona County,” he told Sudans Post over the phone.

“He left in the morning from Rotriak to see the people, the civilians, who are living alongside the road when you are going to Mayom, and that area is Ngol [river].”

The minister stated that those wounded were Unity State Director of Wildlife Service, Maj. Gen. Matai Gai, and SSPDF Division 4 intelligence chief Brig. Gen. Alier Machar.

“He was ambushed on the road by SPLA-IO forces, who were alongside the road, and that ambush resulted in casualties,” he said.

“Some soldiers died, and a major general was wounded, and also SSPDF chief of MI was injured in that ambush,” he added.
