JUBA—Authorities from the Ministry of Wildlife and Conservation on Monday intercepted two vehicles transporting large quantities of illegal bush meat along the busy Juba–Bor highway.
The vehicles were intercepted on Monday while travelling from Bor to Juba.
Lt. Gen. Martin Ring, Assistant Director for Administration and Finance at the Ministry of Wildlife Service and Conservation, called on the public to minimise the killing of wild animals.
“This kind of killing is not good. If you killed an animal to eat, one, two, or three is enough. If you kill the animals so that you can make a business, it is not good,” Ring told SSBC on Monday.
He said the vehicles were found loaded with assorted bush meat suspected to have been obtained through illegal hunting in protected areas.
“You are destroying the country. I have seen those who are doing this work try to have a heart of nationality. Just one, two, and three are for your food only and not for business,” he said.
He disclosed that the drivers and accompanying individuals were arrested and are currently under investigation.
“You blame wildlife when you’re caught, but you caused the problem.” I am requesting you to stop the massive killing of animals.”
He said intensified patrols and enforcement measures are being implemented to curb poaching and trafficking.
The agency urged the public to cooperate with authorities by reporting suspicious activities and refraining from engaging in the illegal wildlife trade.
Poaching has become a major concern in South Sudan, with many species under threat. Authorities were taking a firm stance on wildlife conservation to ensure that these resources are protected for future generations and for economic benefit.
