JUBA – The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have come under scrutiny for allegedly launching a cross-border armed assault in Nyainga-Muda, located in Kangapo II Payam of Kajo-Keji County, Central Equatoria State, according to the Office of the Commissioner.

In a press statement issued on Monday, 28 July 2025, Isaac Wori, Press Secretary in the Commissioner’s Office, confirmed that the incident occurred around 3:00 PM and involved an exchange of gunfire between suspected Ugandan troops and a local joint operation unit stationed in the area.

“The Office of the Commissioner of Kajo-Keji County informs the public that, today, 28th July 2025, at approximately 3:00 PM, an incident involving reported armed engagement occurred in the Nyainga-Muda area of Bori Boma, Kangapo II Payam,” the statement read.

Preliminary reports suggest that UPDF personnel allegedly attacked a South Sudanese security outpost tasked with monitoring the border region. The incident reportedly disrupted a scheduled cross-border meeting between local leaders from both countries, an initiative spearheaded by Hajji Sulaiman Bukya Lubwama, the Yumbe District Resident Commissioner of Uganda.

“Preliminary reports from the ground indicate that forces from the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) attacked our local detachment of a Joint Operation in the area, derailing the planned Cross-Border Meeting at Fitinambaya Village/Nyainga-Muda. Gunfire continued to be heard in the area at the time this statement was released,” Wori added.

The Commissioner’s Office stated it is working closely with security agencies to establish the facts surrounding the alleged attack.

“We are actively coordinating with the security authorities on the ground to verify the full circumstances surrounding this development,” Wori said.

Due to the volatile nature of the situation, officials have not yet confirmed the number of casualties or the extent of the damage.

“Given the fluidity of the situation, verified information on casualties is not yet available. The public is urged to remain calm, steer clear of the affected area, and await further official updates,” the statement concluded.

The Ugandan authorities are yet to comment on the matter. This incident comes amid ongoing efforts by South Sudan and Uganda to strengthen cross-border cooperation and resolve long-standing tensions linked to border demarcation and military presence along contested areas.

Previous incidents involving UPDF patrols and South Sudanese forces have occasionally sparked diplomatic concern, although both governments have pledged to address disputes through dialogue.
