JUBA – South Sudan’s Vice President James Wani Igga who doubles as the chair of the government’s economic cluster has warned that corruption will destroy the world’s youngest country unless the leaders take concrete steps in fighting it.

Speaking during the conclusion of a three-day workshop on draft land policy in Juba, Igga said senior government officials working in the land departments in the country are being bribed to give out documents which he says always result in fighting between citizens.

“Some people are bribed in order to give out land that belongs to somebody else, and these people end up shooting themselves, killing themselves,” Igga said.

“Comrades if we don’t bury corruption, corruption will bury South Sudan… yes. We have become number one most corrupt country in the World do you know that?” the senior government official further asked.

He urged government officials to be responsible like other countries, saying the liberators are losing their promises made during the liberation struggle.

“We came from the liberation struggle like hyenas, hungry and ready to take skins of an animal, no we must be responsible people like other countries,” he said.

For her part, Central Equatoria state minister of land, housing and public utilities Flora Gabriel also admitted corruption in the government institution.

“There are so many malpractices anywhere. You cannot trust anybody doing something like land, land is an economic value,” she said.

“But as a Ministry, when we have all these laws or policies, we are going to put other laws which will guide our administration in the Ministry concerning our process, how are we going to allocate the land and we have to monitor,” she added.

Complaining of corruption is not enough especially when leaders are the ones complaining. How much will the ordinary citizens complain when leaders complain? Through investigation the corrupt will be identified but is there a political will to prosecute them? The leadership turns a blind eye to corruption yet pretends to be concerned about corruption. This is a double standard that will not serve the nation to achieve prosperity for all.
