JUBA – South Sudan’s Vice President for Gender and Youth Cluster, Rebecca Nyandeng de Mabior on Thursday established a zero-grazing farm in Juba to boost milk production.

The unit which is in the initial construction stages comprises a milking area and a feed store.

Speaking during an inspection of the dairy farm site on Thursday, Dr. Albino Bol Dhieu, Minister for Youth and Sports said dairy farming will eradicate hunger and poverty in the country.

“It is mini zero-grazing farms that demonstrate the importance of us having this and multiply in different areas it will reduce issues of cattle raiding and also will give quality resource that will eradicate hunger and poverty,” Dr. Dhieu told reporters on Thursday.

Dr. Dhieu said with the establishment of this zero-grazing farm, they would be able to produce a lot of milk and plenty of meat.

“We have 45 million herds of cattle but these cattle are not having good meat, we are not having good milk, the only way to make sure that they produce a lot of milk and they produce plenty of meat we need to have zero grazing technology,” said Dr. Dhieu.

“Whereby the animals are fed in their places and then they are milk and then we benefit from their milk derivatives and other associated products.”

He urged the youth to embark on agriculture in a bid to boost food production in the country.

“Let the young people practice agriculture and let the young people do the animal farming, by time, we will realize that South Sudan become a wealthy country that has an abundance of animal production business and we will be exporting it to foreign countries,” he said.

“They are Persian, Her Excellency the vice president is bringing them from Kenya and she is bringing some breeds from Sudan, this is a testing pilot project, the food is being prepared, they are special cows.”
