JUBA – The governor of South Sudan’s Warrap state has allegedly fled an assassination attempt by members of South Sudan main armed opposition group, SPLM-IO, in Kuajok town following disagreement over a political matter that could have favored the opposition politician.

“The Governor of Warrap State, Gen. Aleu Ayieny Aleu, was physically assaulted in his family house yesterday evening by the group of untrained SPLM I.O cadres over the matter that could have been discussed in the office in an official working hours,” the office of the governor said in a statement this morning.

The statement said the group of SPLM-IO officials who had come to the governors’ office to meet him physically fought the governor hand by hand in an attempt to force the governor accept their demands.

“The group of the I.O attackers, who stormed Gen Aleu’s house at the late hours, physically fought the Governor after failing to secure favor from Gen. Aleu Ayieny Aleu over politically related matters. The attackers are mainly I.O politicians and other State MPs who were recently appointed to the State Parliament,” the statement said.

“We therefore thank God that your Governor, given his high intelligence, managed to escaped unhurt after acting in self-defence until the attackers were sent out by the family members,” the statement said.

The statement further said that “this incident has been highly propagated by the same group to instead mislead the public that they were assaulted by the Governor Aleu Ayieny Aleu.”

“With this authenticated and reliable information, you are kindly urged to disregard any fake news making rounds on the social media, designed by the desperate politicians seeking their personal interests.

“We would therefore like to assure you that the man of peace is healthy, fit, still determined to develop Warrap State, bring everlasting and durable peace.”
