Tonj, Mayom violence flares amid state of emergency declaration

JUBA – The government of Warrap State in South Sudan has called for an urgent investigation into clashes involving unified forces in Athony, which is located in the border areas between Twic County and the disputed area of Abyei.

The deadly violence that erupted on Tuesday between unified forces left 14 soldiers killed and at least 14 others wounded.

The violence between an officer from the South Sudan People’s Defence Force (SSPDF) and another from the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO) was sparked over a love triangle.

It occurred after an SPLA-IO officer allegedly shot and killed an SSPDF captain he accused of having an affair with his partner.

Mamer Bath Marol, the Warrap State Minister of Information, also called for investigations into the deadly clashes between rival forces that took place at Athony locality in Twic County of Warrap State.

“We called on the leadership of SSPDF to expedite the investigation and de-escalation of the situation,” Marol said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

The Minister condemned the individuals responsible for the violence that has resulted in death, panic, and disruptions within the civilian population in Twic County.

“The government of Warrap state has learned with sadness of the unfortunate violent clash, which occurred on Tuesday, Oct 6 and 7, 2025, among South Sudan Peoples Defence Forces stationed at Athony locality in Twic county, Warrap State,” he stated.

Marol said the violence has left 14 soldiers, including a civilian, dead, and five others wounded, three of whom were hospitalised in critical conditions in Mayen Abun and Turalei hospitals.

“The forces who ignited the violence are apparently defectors affiliated with or loyal to the Sudan People Liberation Movement/ Army in Opposition, and they are reported to have left the area en route to Unity State,” Bath claimed.

He urged the residents in the areas affected by the incident to remain calm while the state and national governments address the situation.

“The government of Warrap state is extremely upset by the loss of lives and extends heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and victims of the clash,” he said.
