Yakani decries cyberattacks on Sudans Post, Radio Tamazuj

Last week, Sudans Post digital newspaper’s Facebook page was taken over by hackers. On Wednesday, Radio Tamazuj’s Twitter handle was hacked and renamed as well.

JUBA, FEBRUARY 18th 2023 (SUDANS POST) – Prominent South Sudan civil society activist, Edmund Yakani, on Thursday issued a statement condemning cyberattacks against two media houses Sudans Post, and Radio Tamazuj.

Last week, Sudans Post digital newspaper’s Facebook page was taken over by hackers.

The hackers then renamed the page and have since been posting phonographic contents. On Wednesday, Radio Tamazuj’s Twitter handle was hacked and renamed as well.

In reaction, Yakani who is the Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) said it is disturbed by the digital attacks on media houses at a critical time in South Sudan’s history.

“Community Empowerment for Progress Organization is strongly disturbed with these recent negative developments toward media outlet online social media platforms. CEPO strongly condemns this negative and unlawful act perpetrated by the individual or group of persons behind the violation of the freedom of expression by engaging in hacking of social media platforms,” he said.

“It is a bad indicator in less than a month that two online media houses’ social media platforms are hacked. Sudans Post website official Facebook hacked and after two weeks now today 16th February, 2023 Radio Tamazuj official twitter handle hacked,” he added.

Yakani said that “These negative developments towards the hacking of social media platforms is disturbing and especially at this particular moment where the country is facing political transitional process around constitution making, conduct of elections and transitional justice.”

“This political transitional process requires observation or respect of freedom of expression and free media

“Finally, CEPO is urging some funders or donors to invest funds on strengthening media outlets digital security and safety capacities.”
