JUBA – Prominent activist Edmund Yakani is appealing to President Salva Kiir Mayardit to establish a body that he said would be tasked for overseeing the implementation of the resolutions of the governors’ forum, according to a statement extended to Sudans Post.

Governors from the country’s ten states are meeting in the capital Juba to deliberate on how to enhance the implementation process of the revitalized peace agreement, amid concerns from activists such as Yakani for implementation of the previous forum’s forum.

In a statement, the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) said its main concern is the failure of the governments in the state to implement the recommendations of the governors’ forum and stressed that the gathering is crucial in the implementation of the agreement.

“Community Empowerment for Progress Organization’s main concerns about the Governors’ Forums is the lack of implementing of its remarkable resolutions and recommendation since most previous initiative in 2021,” CEPO said in the statement.

Edmund Yakani, the civil society watchdog’s Executive Director, said for the governors’ forum to be effective, there are needs for the genuine implementation of its resolutions, citing failure to implement the resolutions of the 2012 Governors’ Forum.

“The effectiveness of the Governors forum is totally demanding on the genuine and timely implementation of its adopted resolutions. In the governors’ forums dated 26-30 November 2012, it was recommended that the government in Juba ‘Improve monitoring of Governors’ Forum recommendations and participation in future for a’. This resolution was not implemented till today where we are holding the 6th Governors forum. One of key requirement for better performance of the Governors forum is the commitment for the implementation of the forum resolutions,” he said.

“H.E. President Salva Kiir in this 6th Governors Forum should declare establishment of the inclusive secretariat for the implementation of the 6th Governors forum resolutions following the resolution of 2012 calling for improve monitoring of the Governors forum resolutions implementation. The secretariat should draw staff from the following institutions ministry of presidential affairs, ministry of federal affairs, ministry of peace building and ministry of finance including representation of development partners, civil society, youth and women.

“If the resolutions of the Governors forum are not always effectively implemented than the Governors forum will end as space of political of tourism. Establishing secretariat for the implementation of the Governors forum will make each state governor and chief administrator area to invest funds for the implementation of the adopted resolutions,” Yakani stressed.

“CEPO is strongly urging the political leadership at national, states and administrative areas to utilize the governors’ forum as a platform of drawing practical decisions on improvement of social service delivery to the citizens and good governance

“Finally, CEPO will be effectively tracking the political commitment for delivering the pledges made by our leaders during the 6th Governors forum for meeting the best interest of the citizens across the country.”
