Yakani welcomes trail of 5 national security officers

South Sudan prominent activist Edmund Yakani has welcomed the decision by the National Security Service (NSS) to prosecute five of its servicemembers who are accused of unlawfully detaining an unnamed citizen.

JUBA – South Sudan prominent activist Edmund Yakani has welcomed the decision by the National Security Service (NSS) to prosecute five of its servicemembers who are accused of unlawfully detaining an unnamed citizen.

In statements to the media yesterday, spokesman of the National Security Service David John said the spy agency has put on trial five of its members including a high-raking officer who ordered his guards to arrest a civilian without due process.

In reaction, activist Yakani who is also the Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) welcomed the decision by the National Security Service and said the move by the spy agency is remarkable.

“CEPO welcomed the recent act undertake by the leadership of the national security services on 29 September for punishing 4 of their officers for arresting civilians without following due procedures. The move is remarkable and hope it will be a policy approach for any NSS officers regardless of his or her rank,” Yakani told Sudans Post this afternoon.

“Fighting indiscipline behaviors among the members of the security and defense sectors should be taken up as key priority for winning citizens transit and confidence on the security and defense sectors. The indiscipline officers in our security and defense sectors do direct contribute in make the citizens mistrust the state,” he added.

He further called on “the leadership of our security and defense sectors institutions to establish public compliance box for generating regular assessment of the public trust on the institutions.”
