Scrum master is typically the term used to refer to this role, even by teams not explicitly following scrum. Other terms used infrequently include iteration manager, agile coach, or team coach.
The fundamental difference between a project manager and a scrum master is that the project manager’s focus is on the project, whereas the scrum master’s focus is on the scrum team and its team members.
Scrum masters are in charge of teams that use the
scrum methodology —a framework that helps teams who build and iterate quickly, often in software development. The main pillars of scrum are transparency, adaptation, and inspection, and the scrum master uses these to guide the team’s work. Since scrum leads to faster paced outputs, scrum masters need to be organized and engaged in the workflow to ensure nothing is overlooked. In this guide, we’ll discuss what a scrum master is and what their responsibilities are.
If you’re a scrum master, are looking to bring one on, or interested in becoming one, you can use this guide as a resource to better understand how a professional scrum master works.
There are several ways in which a scrum master would serve the organization. A few of them are: the scrum master is the primary person who facilitates the adoption of scrum framework in any organization. The scrum master makes people understand the principles and practices of scrum. This implies that the scrum master leads, trains, and coaches the members of the organization to have an effective scrum adoption. Advising and planning the implementations of scrum in the organization is also one of the major accountabilities performed by scrum masters in the organization. Scrum employs an empirical approach towards complex work which people who are new to the framework may find difficult to understand.
Scrum masters are in a very important position in a company. They both have the “battlefield” insights and a 30,000-foot view of how different teams progress on a day to day operation. How? one way of the ways is through agile retrospective. Facilitating agile retrospective gives scrum masters the opportunity to spot trends and recurring problems in a team. Though knowing the problem is just one step in catalysing change, scrum masters at least know what has to be changed in an organisation. And that’s where every change starts with. I even wrote an extensive guide on how to turn agile retrospective into an actionable problem-solving tool for executives using the impediment board.
