After pouring the concrete into the forms, use a vibrating rod or an orbital sander without sand to remove trapped air bubbles. This process, called consolidation, ensures the mix tightly surrounds the reinforcement and fills every corner of the form.

Work quickly but carefully to consolidate the entire footprint of the footing. Incomplete vibration leads to weak spots and honeycombing, which can severely compromise the structural integrity of the wall.

Finishing the Surface

Once the concrete is level with the tops of the forms, use a bullfloat to smooth the surface and bring water-free cement paste to the top. This creates a uniform, strong surface that is ready for curing.

Backfill and Drainage Installation

When the wall reaches the proper height, begin backfilling behind it in thin layers, compacting each layer to eliminate voids. Proper compaction prevents the soil from settling and pushing the wall forward.

As you backfill, install the perforated drain pipe and wrap it with filter fabric to keep soil particles from clogging the pores. The drain must slope gently downward to direct water safely away from the wall’s foundation.
