Building a raised bed from scratch is one of the most rewarding projects a gardener can undertake. It transforms a patch of uncertain soil into a defined, manageable ecosystem that warms faster in the spring, drains efficiently after rain, and sits at a height that is easier on the back. Unlike flimsy store-bought kits, a custom-built bed allows you to control every variable, from the depth of the soil to the type of wood used for the frame.

This process involves selecting the right location, determining the optimal dimensions, and preparing the ground beneath it. A well-thought-out plan reduces future maintenance and ensures the bed integrates seamlessly into your existing landscape design.

Planning Your Raised Bed
Site Selection and Sunlight

The success of your raised bed hinges largely on its placement. Most vegetables and flowers require a minimum of six to eight hours of direct sunlight daily. Observe your yard throughout the day to identify spots that meet this requirement. Avoid low-lying areas where water pools after a storm, as this can lead to root rot even in a raised structure. Proximity to a water source is also a practical consideration, as hauling heavy watering cans quickly becomes tedious.
Dimensions and Soil Depth

Standard raised beds range from 4 to 8 feet wide, allowing you to reach the center comfortably from either side without stepping on the soil and compacting it. The length is up to personal preference, though shorter beds are often more manageable. Depth is a critical factor; for most vegetables, a depth of 12 to 18 inches is ideal. This depth provides ample room for root development and allows for better drainage and aeration compared to in-ground soil.
Gathering Materials and Tools
Once your plan is set, you need to source the materials. The frame is the skeleton of your bed, and choosing a durable material is the most important decision. Rot-resistant woods like cedar or redwood are excellent choices as they naturally resist decay and do not require chemical treatment. Alternatively, composite lumber or corrugated metal offers a modern aesthetic and extreme longevity, though these options can be more expensive.

Preparing the Site

Before the first board is nailed, you must prepare the ground. Even though the bed is raised, grass and weeds beneath it will inevitably try to grow upward. The most effective method is to smother the existing vegetation. Lay down a thick layer of cardboard or several layers of newspaper directly on the grass. This block prevents light and air from reaching the plants, effectively killing them without the use of herbicides.
Next, position the frame on top of the prepared area. If you are building a taller bed, you may want to excavate the soil slightly where the legs will sit to ensure the structure is perfectly level. Constructing the Frame
Assembling the frame is the hands-on phase of the project. If you are using standard lumber, you will typically cut four pieces to create the perimeter. For long beds, it is advisable to add a center support board beneath the frame to prevent it from sagging over time. When cutting the corners, decide whether to use simple butt joints or more advanced miter or lap joints; while butt joints are sufficient for most applications, angled cuts provide a cleaner, more professional appearance.
Secure the corners with galvanized screws, drilling pilot holes first to prevent the wood from splitting. If you opt for metal edging, the assembly process is often simpler, involving bending the panels into shape and locking them together with connector pins. Regardless of the material, ensure the frame is perfectly level and square as you build; a slight tilt now will result in an uneven bed later.
Filling and Planting
A common mistake new builders make is filling the bed with topsoil alone. The ideal raised bed mix is a blend of topsoil, compost, and organic matter, designed to balance water retention with drainage. In many regions, you can purchase a "raised bed mix" from landscape suppliers, which is pre-formulated for optimal growth. To improve aeration further, especially in heavier soils, mixing in some coarse sand or perlite is highly beneficial.
Once the bed is filled with soil, water it thoroughly to settle the material and eliminate air pockets. Let it sit for a few days before planting, as this allows the soil to stabilize. When it comes to planting, the dense, nutrient-rich soil of a raised bed means you can place crops slightly closer together than in traditional rows. Follow the spacing guidelines for your specific plants, but remember that the goal is to maximize space without creating competition for light and nutrients.
