Manteca is an interesting place. In 1861, Joshua Cowell was supposed to have been the city's founder, when it was founded. As it turns out, the town and its train station had the exact same name. There was already a Cowell Station in San Joaquin county, so the name Cowell wasn't considered. When officials went to file the papers, there was a misprint on Monteca.
As the townspeople liked this rendition of their original choice, and because refiling paperwork at that time was often more trouble than it was worth, the name stuck. Butter or lard is known as Manteca south of the border in Spanish. It seems that easy-going energy has survived generations.
