How is a tax refund advance better than a payday loan?

A payday loan is borrowed against a future paycheck and carries high fees with a short repayment window that often leads to rollovers. A refund advance is paid against your own expected tax refund and repaid automatically from that refund, with no rollover or compounding. The Holiday Advance carries no charge and the Shield Advance carries disclosed bank fees.

Who qualifies for a refund advance instead of a payday loan?

Approval is based on qualifying for a refund and having no outstanding IRS debt, not on a credit score, so it can reach households that conventional lenders decline. If your return shows a refund and nothing offsets it, the advance can be paid against that expected refund. If there is no refund, there is nothing to advance against.

What does a refund advance cost compared to a payday loan?

The Holiday Advance, up to $500 before the IRS opens, is stated as no charge. The Shield Advance, from $500 up to $7,500 after the IRS accepts the return, carries specific bank fees disclosed upfront and deducted once from the refund. Unlike a payday loan, there is no rollover or compounding interest.
