Crafting Sliding Drawers for Cabinets: A Comprehensive Guide
Adding sliding drawers to your cabinets not only enhances their functionality but also gives them a sleek, modern look. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the process of creating sliding drawers, from planning to installation. Let's dive right in!
Gather Your Tools and Materials
Before you start, ensure you have the following tools and materials:
- Circular saw
- Drill and driver set
- Jigsaw
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Sandpaper (120-grit)
- Wood glue
- Screws (1-1/4" and 2-1/2")
- Pocket hole jig (optional)
- Plywood (3/4" thick)
- Hardware: drawer slides, drawer pulls, and soft-close mechanisms (optional)
Plan Your Drawer Dimensions
Measure the space where you'll install the drawer. Subtract 1/2" from the width and height to account for the drawer slides. For example, if your space is 18" wide and 12" high, your drawer should be 17.5" wide and 11.5" high. The depth is up to you, but a common size is 12".

Cut the Drawer Parts
Using your circular saw, cut the following pieces from your plywood:
- 2x (Width) x (Height) - Drawer sides
- 2x (Depth) x (Height) - Drawer back and front
- 1x (Width) x (Depth) - Drawer bottom
Assemble the Drawer Box
Apply wood glue to the edges of the drawer sides and back. Attach the back first, then the sides, using 1-1/4" screws. If you have a pocket hole jig, use it to create pocket holes on the inside of the sides and back for a cleaner look. Attach the drawer bottom using 2-1/2" screws from the inside.
Install the Drawer Slides
Measure and mark the location of your drawer slides, typically 1" from the top and bottom of the cabinet opening. Attach the cabinet-side slides using the provided hardware. Then, attach the drawer-side slides to the inside of your drawer box, ensuring they align with the cabinet-side slides.

Add Soft-Close Mechanisms (Optional)
If you've chosen to include soft-close mechanisms, install them now according to the manufacturer's instructions. These mechanisms provide a smooth, gentle closure for your drawers.
Attach the Drawer Pulls and Finish Up
Measure and mark the location for your drawer pulls, typically 1.5" from the top and centered horizontally. Drill pilot holes and attach the pulls using the provided hardware. Give your drawer a light sanding to remove any rough edges or glue residue.
Install the Drawer
Carefully place your drawer into the cabinet opening, ensuring the drawer slides engage. Test the drawer's movement, making any necessary adjustments. Your sliding drawer is now complete and ready to use!
