Power shortage due to mismanagement
 
The recent 17.5 per cent hike in power tariff for the domestic sector by the Punjab State Electricity Board has affected the common man. Besides this, the hike that has been implemented from the back date is cited as unjustified by people. The summer months have already been harsh on residents due to the power cuts. And even after suffering long hours of cuts they would have to pay power bill arrears from April onwards. This is what a cross section of people has to say on the issue.
        
 
Security up ahead of festivals

        Dr Ajeet Kumar, assistant professor (presently pursuing PhD) in the department of veterinary gynaecology and obstetrics, GADVASU, has been awarded a fellowship for six months by the Canadian Bureau for International Education on behalf of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Canada, and Undergraduate Student Exchange Programme.
 
Review meeting of banks held

        A review meeting of banks for the quarter ending June 2009 was organised recently. Annual credit plan for 2009-10 was formulated for Rs 5,821-crore disbursement under the priority sector by banks in the Ludhiana district alone. During the first quarter of 2009-10, the banks had disbursed Rs 1,551 crore against the target of Rs 1,517 crore in the priority sector advances.

Two booked for cheating

        Two persons have been booked for cheating a woman on the pretext of sending her daughter to Canada. Sukhdev Kaur of Rurka village near Mullanpur in a complaint lodged with the police had stated that Tejwinder Singh Sekhon, the accused, and his wife, Kulwinder Kaur, lured her to  send her daughter, Ramandeep Kaur, to Canada for a nanny course.

        Three persons, including the father-in-law of the complainant, have been booked for the gang-rape. A resident of Mehal Kalan in Barnala district in a complaint lodged with police and a petition in the High Court had stated that she got married to Ajaib Singh.
