Officer in custody for more than 48 hours
Panchkula, August 27
As per service rules, a government servant is to be placed under suspension if he spends more than 48 hours behind bars. Whatever may be the case, in the ACP Adarshdeep case, the authorities in Panchkula have not taken any action yet and are busy passing the buck. It has been eight days since ACP (under training) Adarshdeep Singh is lodged in Burail Jail.

A group pf youngsters reportedly annoyed with a teenaged boy whom they bumped into in the wee hours on Saturday, first roughly pulled the boy into the car and then threw him into a different sector.

Nine-yr-old kidnapped
Chandigarh, August 27
A nine-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped by her neighbours from Indira Colony at Mani Majra. The girl, Shobha, is still missing and the UT Police has booked two neighbours. A case has been registered at the Mani Majra police station.

Mehak's kin allege police inaction

Close shave for milkman
Mohali, August 27
High drama was witnessed at Kumbhra Chowk when a milkman’s motorcycle stuck in a manhole, the cover of which caved in, this afternoon. The man escaped unhurt. The chowk was blocked by agitated PTI teachers today. The milkman tried to cross the chowk by taking his vehicle on the ‘kutcha’ path. When Baljit, the milkman, was trying to cross the manhole, its cover caved in immediately.

PWD workers protest in support of demands

Workers of the Haryana PWD department today gheraoed the Vidhan Sabha to press for their demands. However, they were stopped by the police at the road separating Sectors 4 and 5 and were not allowed to go farther.

Over 100 donate blood at PGGCG-42

As many as 107 units of blood was collected at a blood donation camp held at Post Graduate Government College for Girls (PGGCG), Sector 42, here today. Students as well as staff members, including teaching and non-teaching staff, donated blood during the camp. The National Service Scheme volunteers from the college also participated in the camp.

Chandigarh: To encourage students to refine and showcase their communication and presentation skills, a powerpoint presentation competition was organised at Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 27, on Monday. The topics included “Smile is Contagious” and “An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind”. The participants from Classes VIII and IX impressed the audience with their expertly designed presentations along with balanced and well-researched commentaries. The first position was clinched by Class VIII-A (Simran Singh and Naini Dahra). The second position went to Class VIII-D (Saurabh Gupta and Raghav Chadha) and the third position went to Class IX-D (Angel Pandhi and Tanisha Malhotra).

CBSE-affiliated private schools in city yet to wake up
Chandigarh, August 27
As compared to government schools, private schools in the city have not woken up yet to the concept of vocational courses. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), in a circular issued to its affiliated schools in May, had directed them to make a choice from a wide array of vocational courses to be offered from the next academic session at the senior secondary level.

Alleging that they were not allowed to sit for the examination by the college management, around 100 students of Rayat and Bahara Engineering College agitated on the campus here today. All the students are pursuing their final year of BTech at the college. The agitating students were seen stopping other students from taking their midterm examinations that commenced today.

Dera Bassi presents a picture of neglect facilities given a miss

Lack of basic amenities in health care system is a major problem that the residents of Dera Bassi are facing. There is a 30-bed community health centre which lacks adequate number of doctors and other emergency services. Patients in critical condition are referred to hospitals of Chandigarh. SMO Dera Bassi Dr JK Bansal said that this hospital was promoted as sub-division hospital but doctors and infrastructure could not be provided till now.

Two held for bribing Rs 80,000 to police
Banur, August 27
The Banur police has arrested two persons for black marketing and trying to offer bribe to the police here. The persons were loading electrical material and pipes into a truck when they were apprehended. The police also recovered Rs 80,000 from the truck owner, who made an attempt to bribe the police in order to get away. The accused were identified as Ranunki Singh, a resident of Hargowal in Hoshiarpur district, and the truck owner Somnath, a resident of Majari near Phagwara. They were booked under Sections 420, 120B of the IPC for indulging in black marketing and for trying to give bribe to the police. Later, the accused were taken into a 14-day judicial custody.

DPS Jalandhar lifts trophy

In the final match of Inter-DPS Basket Ball Tournament 2012 (boys' open), DPS Jalandhar has defeated DPS Bathinda here today. Around two-dozen teams from Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab had participated in the tournament.

Case to come up for hearing today

The crucial case of land acquisition for the Phase II and III of Rajiv Gandhi Information Technology Park will come up for hearing tomorrow. During the last hearing, the Supreme Court had directed the UT Administration and petitioners to submit documents in support of their claims.

11 gamblers arrested, Rs 3.39 lakh recovered
Zirakpur, August 27
The local police has arrested as many as 11 persons under the Gambling Act here today. They have also recovered Rs 3.39 lakh from their possession. The gamblers, identified as Raman Sharma, Kapil Batra, Jatinder Kumar, Mohit Kumar, Varinder Kumar Aneja, Nitin Nagpal, Shani Nagpal, Jaskaran Singh, Manjit Singh, Daljit Singh and Kaku, were arrested from a hotel room.

Flesh trade racket busted, 8 arrested
Mohali, August 27
The local police claimed to have busted a flesh trade racket by arresting eight persons, including two women, from a Phase-XI flat here today. The accused, identified as Manjinder Singh and Jaswinder Singh, both residents of Mohali, Anil Kumar from Ambala, Balwinder Singh from Mandi Gobindgarh, Gurmukh Singh and Mohammad Taufiq from Fatehgarh Sahib.

23-yr-old girl commits suicide
Mohali, August 27
A 23-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging herself with a ceiling fan at her in-laws’ residence at Balongi village here today. The deceased has been identified as Sapna, wife of Partap Singh.

CLTA boost for local students

The Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) is all set to bring bring smiles on the local tennis lovers as the city is gearing up for the Davis Cup, which is world's most prestigious inter-country tournament, from September 14-16. The association has decided to provide tickets to the local students for Rs 100 only.

Rishab defeats Ankush, marches into third round
Chandigarh, August 27
Rishab Sharda, a local lad, defeated Ankush Mishra while Paras Dahiya beat Vatsal Chauhan in the second round of ongoing CLTA-AITA Championship Series Tennis Tournament here. The tournament is being played under boys' and girls' (U-14 and U-18) category at the CLTA Sports Complex. In the boys category (U-14), Paras Dahiya overcame Vatsal Chauhan by 8-4 while Rishabh defeated Ankush Mishra by 8-1. In other matches, Rohit Kumar defeated Bhavraj Singh by 8-2 and Rahul Kumar overcame Shreyas Chopra by 8-2.

Gymnast Shreya Sharma of Shishu Niketan School, Sector 43, scored 11.50 points to win the Inter-School Rhythmic Gymnastics Tournament, here . The badminton team of Moti Ram Arya School has defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Manimajra, by 2-0 during the Inter-school Badminton Tournament here today. The team of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Manimajra Complex, has bagged the over all trophy of Inter-school Sqay Martial Art (U- 17) category here today.
