World Premiere! Backert Labs Rhumba Extreme 1.4 Preamplifier Review

World Premiere! Backert Labs Rhumba Extreme 1.4 Preamplifier Review

Jul 20, 2024

From the moment I took it out of the box, it was clear the Rhumba Extreme 1.4 preamp is a well-thought-out and designed component with excellent build quality. There are no visible screws or ventilation slots on the chassis itself, giving it a very clean look. It is designed for the person who has or expects to evolve into owning a fairly extensive high-end system. It has flexible connectivity without locking in a phono stage, DAC, or streamer that may be unnecessary for your needs or become technologically obsolete. It is a Class A design with auto-bias, zero negative feedback, and low current and voltage passing through the tubes which coincidentally embodies long and trouble-free tube life.

FiiO R7 Music Server / Streamer / Headphone Amplifier Review

FiiO R7 Music Server / Streamer / Headphone Amplifier Review

Jul 18, 2024

My first serious listening of the FiiO R7 was as a music server for my Westone Audio MACH series review for which it served spectacularly (my new computer sends a noise over the USB that is picked up by my reference tube amplifier) whether connected via S/PDIF or USB. Up to this point, I have been using my FiiO M11 DAP for this purpose which has the drawback of only one USB port so I can either charge or play but not both simultaneously, needless to say from now on the R7 will act as my signal source as it works better than my computer for said purpose. As a music server, the R7 is ideal, the FiiO Music App is simple and intuitive, and for those who want remote control with streaming integration, it is Roon Ready. While the display is not tablet-sized, it is as large as any I have seen on any music server (all of which cost exponentially more) equipped with one, and a larger screen can be attached via USB. The only missing component is the Remote Control which I presume FiiO will release at some future date along with the matching speakers...

Triangle Art L-200 MK2 Stereo Vacuum Tube Preamplifier Review

Triangle Art L-200 MK2 Stereo Vacuum Tube Preamplifier Review

Jul 18, 2024

Yes, this is the Mark 2 version of Triangle Art's L-200 vacuum tube stereo preamplifier. No, I have not heard the L-200 Mark 1 on its own within my system; just at shows in a complete Triangle Art system. So I have no reference to tell anyone sonically what the difference between Gen 1 and Gen 2 is. The new version utilizes a new circuit configuration described as a symmetrical signal flow layout. It is a two-module component, with the power supply isolated in a separate enclosure connected to the main preamp with an umbilical. Once in the main preamp enclosure, the power is separated into a dual mono configuration which feeds two isolated line amplification stages. Each power supply filter incorporates proprietary chokes and Mundorf capacitors. The line stage amp incorporates more Mundorf caps, AMRG resistors, and custom output transformers in a single-ended output transformer design....

Sound Practices: Forgetabout Amps!

Sound Practices: Forgetabout Amps!

Jul 17, 2024

I just finished reading a copy of the famous new magazine Sound Practices Number 2. I got my copy yesterday, the same day my agent informed me that I brown nosed myself another job acting in a Hollywood movie. She told me I was cast along with Jeremy Irons, Meryl Streep, Glen Close, and Wynona Rider — so I figured I deserved MILLIONS. I had to spend the whole day on the phone with my agent and their lawyer. I told them The Gallo doesn't work for less than a million a film. They offered 10,000. I took 15 K-that's $2,985,000 less than each of the other actors was getting. With all this Hollywood-style schmoozing to do, I couldn't just relax and sit around reading my new SP #2. The thing is that as soon as I got the job I started to worry. I've worked as an actor for 12 years but I still get it in my mind that I don't know what the hell I'm doing, and I probably don't. I always imagine all the other actors are going to think that I stink and that they will hate me.

Raven Audio Osprey MK3.1 Int Amp And Corvus Reference Monitors Review

Jul 15, 2024

As I said, I have previously listened to equipment like the Raven Osprey MK3.1 Integrated Amplifier and Corvus Reference Monitors. Having this pairing in my living room was almost like slipping on a pair of comfortable slippers. I said almost because the Raven equipment was much better at unveiling the inner workings of the music than what I had in my living room for so many years. The highs were cleaner, the mids more pristine, and the bass had more punch.

The Passing Of Milan Karan And Andrew Singer

The Passing Of Milan Karan And Andrew Singer

Jul 13, 2024

As much as I try to avoid the Editorial becoming an Obituary page, sadly, sometimes there is no other option. This month, the audio industry lost two big names; one in the high-end amplifier world, and another at one time the high-end audio retailer. High-end amplifier designer Milan Karan of Karan Acoustics fame passed away just before the AXPONA Show in Chicago. I spoke to Karan's close friend Branko Bozic of Audiofreaks, "On the 10th of April this year, the high-end audio world lost a precious and gifted designer and artisan when Milan Karan left us at an early age of 58 in his native Novi Sad (Serbia) after a relatively short and ruthless illness. And, much more than that, the world in general and I personally have prematurely lost a good fellow human being....

Throwback: Bella Sound Hanalei Monoblock Amplifier Review

Throwback: Bella Sound Hanalei Monoblock Amplifier Review

Jul 12, 2024

The Bella Sound Hanalei monoblocks' prodigious amount of power resulted in not only being able to reproduce the album as loud as I desired without a hint of overload distortion but also being able to reproduce the album's colossal dynamic peaks with zero overload. The Sound Lab electrostatic speakers in my reference system are more than a cut above most electrostatic speakers in that they can play very loudly without breaking up. But they can't defy the laws of physics, nor are my ears indestructible. I was quick to discover that both the monoblocks and the speakers were able to play louder than I could withstand.

Let's Talk About Luxurious Premium Audio Shows.

Jul 11, 2024

If you're an audiophile, you've almost certainly either been to a high-fidelity audio event (Hi-Fi Show) or wanted to go to one. Back in the days before I got into the industry, every time CES – the Consumer Electronics Show – came around (There used to be two of them – Las Vegas and Chicago), I would always ask my industry friends if they had gone to it; how they liked it; what had been the hit of the Show; and what new great stuff I should hunt down and buy for myself. Invariably, the answer I got was that they had been too busy working their own exhibits to actually go and see or listen to anybody else's; and that they had effectively seen or heard nothing....

World Premiere! Metronome Audio Le DAC 2 Review

World Premiere! Metronome Audio Le DAC 2 Review

Jul 11, 2024

It's no secret that Hollywood has become the land of the sequel. Nine of the top ten grossing movies from 2022 were sequels. I excluded The Batman because it technically wasn't a sequel, but it was a reboot, for goodness' sake. Now I'm not going to bash sequels out of hand. I watch a bunch of them myself. My big complaint is when a sequel is done by a different set of writers and a new director and is so different from its predecessor in tone and theme that about halfway through I throw up my hands and ask, "Why am I watching this?". One sequel I'm looking forward to watching is Dune: Part 2. While they call it a sequel, it's more of a continuation of the first movie with Denis Villeneuve and his team completing the task....

Acora Acoustics QRC 2 Floorstanding Loudspeaker Review

Jul 08, 2024

The Acora Acoustics QRC series is identical to the SRC series, aside from using quartz rather than Black African Granite, though one source indicates the quartz version is slightly lighter. Both stones are fully polished and 3cm thick. The bottom five inches of the column seemed to be solid stone when I peeked inside with a flashlight and poked around. That would explain why the speaker seems so bottom-heavy....

Making Music Louder

Making Music Louder

Jul 07, 2024

I doubt many of our readers have a deep understanding about how music is "made" these days. Yes, a lot of music elements are still fundamentally recorded in studios where everything from microphones to preamps, to dynamic processors, and well-treated rooms are vital. Human voice remains one of those key elements, but even the "voices" we hear are far from what was recorded. A lot of the music we listen to today is done from pre-existing sound elements that are either sampled or synthesized, often overlayed with actual recorded parts. There's hardly any long section of music that relies on a continuous recorded element that stays true to what was recorded....

Defining The 'Right' Hi-Fi Sound

Defining The 'Right' Hi-Fi Sound

Jul 04, 2024

There are very few absolutes in hi-fi today, and what certainly isn't one of them (and never will be) is what defines the 'right' hi-fi sound. Ask a room of music and hi-fi enthusiasts for their thoughts on the matter and things would all too soon erupt into the kind of pandemonium that would derange a digital-cable convention. (Just probably not as quickly.) The die-hard rockers might throw out words such as "powerful", "atmospheric" and "bassy"; those who instinctively request Norah Jones at hi-fi shows may advocate the one that delivers the lushest vocals (midrange); the greatest lovers of life – the bon vivants – could say anything that makes music fun to listen to....

Siltech Launches Master Crown Cables

Jul 03, 2024

Siltech recently launched a new, flagship series of audio cables called Master Crown. As with everything they do, the launch would be a first-class event. With the help of US Siltech distributor, Monarch Systems, based in Englewood, CO, a press event was held Friday, June 20th to introduce and demonstrate the advantages of this new product to the audio press. Monarch Systems was founded by two audio industry veterans, Jon Baker and Rich Maez, and with the assistance of their Marketing Manager, Jaclyn Schnirring, they played host to seven members of the press in a spacious, beautiful home in the gated community of Las Campanas, to the west of the heart of old Santa Fe, at a location they call La Casita....

Backert Labs Rhumba Extreme 1.4 Preamplifier Review

Backert Labs Rhumba Extreme 1.4 Preamplifier Review

Jul 02, 2024

Backert Labs has seemingly come out of nowhere. Their first review appeared in 2015 and Enjoy the Music.com reviewed the 1.3 version of the Rhumba Extreme in 2019. This micro-manufacturer specializes in tube-powered preamplifiers, with a tube phono stage being a logical extension of their focus. All of their manufacturing and assembly is done in the USA. I had heard the buzz on the brand only one other time before my audio buddy, Tom, informed me that he had ordered a Rhumba 1.2 on US Audiomart that had been upgraded to a 1.3. Listening to his familiar system, I noticed an impressive improvement. When the 1.4 series was announced I contacted Andy Tebbe, the President and frontman of the company, and was promised a premiere review when the design was finalized.

Raven Audio Osprey MK3.1 Integrated Amplifier And Corvus Reference Monitors Review

Raven Audio Osprey MK3.1 Integrated Amplifier And Corvus Reference Monitors Review

Jul 02, 2024

I grew up listening to music through my dad's Dynaco ST70. My Dad was a DIY guy; it was the best kit available in 1960. I inherited it and the matching PAS preamp my sophomore year of college. I then bought a pair of ADS L620 speakers to go with them. That kept me happy for 20 years. I eventually replaced my ailing Dynaco gear with a Jolida JD202 integrated. The Dynaco and Jolida were very similar, using EL34 pentodes in an ultra-linear configuration. A little later, the ADS speakers made way for the Thiel CS1.5s. These were both two-way bass-reflex speakers. In the last few years, my interest in lower-power amps and high-efficiency speakers has led me away from the pairings I had so long, but I will always have warm memories of listening to music with them....

Professional Musician And Recording Studio Expert Rick Beato Speaks

Professional Musician And Recording Studio Expert Rick Beato Speaks

Jul 01, 2024

As a classically-trained musician since the early 1970s (at the age of 8), over the decades questions about why I walked away from the music scene decades ago occasionally pop up. During high school there was a touch of studio time, and here is where my eyes were open to the reality of recording music. As a percussionist and drummer, yes my set was a bit more expansive than the average, yet within my head were tones, textures, and sounds... upon seeing my percussion/drum set was immediately bumping up against recording studio effort and time (and their desire to properly mic up such a kit). Sadly, the apparent lack of concern, with one studio then saying I should just use their kit within a small boxed room and dead / lifeless drum heads. Am recalling this story not for any ego or other overly-inflated.... Yet to let musicians nowadays know, am talking about true musical artists who have a vision... you intrinsically know who you are.

Throwback: Bella Sound Hanalei Monoblock Amplifier Review

Jul 01, 2024

Bella Sound's offices and factory are in Northern California, about 25 miles south of San Francisco. They design and manufacture amplifiers, power conditioners, and AC power cables. The subject of this review is their Hanalei monoblocks, which have an output rating of a substantial 700 Watts into 4 Ohms. Bella Sound offers one other amplifier, their Kahili stereo amplifier, rated at 400 Wpc, not as powerful as the Hanalei monoblocks, but still a considerable amount of power. Both amplifiers that Bella Sound manufactures have enough solid-state power that one might not be faulted for assuming that both their amplifiers, especially the subject of this review, are made with a Class D circuit.....

The Spirit Of Music

The Spirit Of Music

Jun 30, 2024

The ancient Greeks had a story about Pan, the horned and goat-legged God of the Shepherds, who fell in love with a beautiful wood nymph named Syrinx, who, sadly for both of them, couldn't return his interest and, instead, ran into the woods to be away from him. He gave chase and, as they ran, Syrinx found herself cut off by a river and, rather than be caught by him, she called out to her sister's spirits, begging them to find a way to hide her. They responded by transforming her into a bunch of river reeds – hollow stemmed cattails, lilac reeds, or something similar – which, when he got to them, Pan embraced, and when he breathed across them, he found to make a sweet and haunting sound.

Historic Video: A Dream Of Audio Perfection

Jun 27, 2024

Throughout the years, even from the very beginning, there was audio gear... and critics soon thereafter. Audio gear evolved, just as audiophiles carefully adjusted our listening space to accommodate it all. Finding the best recordings can be a challenge, too! Here's a great look back at the beginnings of high fidelity home audio equipment, and the reviewers in hopes of finding gear that achieved sound perfection. Call it what you will, perfect sound forever or the absolute sound, audiophiles seek to reproduce music within homes that is indistinguishable from what was heard during the live event.

Audiophile & High-End Physical Media Music Formats

Jun 23, 2024

ll physical audio formats are trying for the same success LP had with the 'vinyl revival'. More than just a flash in the pan, the return of vinyl has proved to have true staying power, and has long since outlived the hipster trend that sparked LP's 21st century reboot. We have seen the return of compact cassette at one extreme, and the rebirth of the open-reel professional tape machine at the other. And we've even seen some recent uptick in sales of CD. Physical formats, it seems, aren't going away just yet. t why are they still popular? Someone buying a CD is spending more on a digital file than they would spend streaming a more high-resolution online counterpart. However, the closer you investigate this trend to own physical copies, some fascinating points begin to emerge....

Acora Acoustics QRC 2 Floorstanding Loudspeaker Review

Acora Acoustics QRC 2 Floorstanding Loudspeaker Review

Jun 22, 2024

With the Backert preamp in the system, I then returned to using the AGD GaNFET amps. While the difference between the tube amps and the AGD amp was relatively small in my original reference system. before the addition of the Acora speakers, Synergistic Pink fuses, PowerCell8 SX, Auva footer, and the Backert preamp, each of these additional components increased the resolution of the system. Together, with the fast speed and high resolution of the AGD amp, the music crossed the line, becoming too analytical and almost piercing in the treble. This is not to fault the amp. I simply have to back off the resolution by removing some footers, changing a fuse, or even rolling tubes in the Backert preamp. That will be my personal adventure in the coming weeks. I'm sure it is doable and there is no need to take you down that trail in this review. That's the fun of fine-tuning that comes when you're this close to perfection.

TBT: Crystal Cable Monet Network Ethernet Cable Review

Jun 20, 2024

Crystal Cable utilizes a proprietary signal and ground conductor fabricated from Infinite Crystal Silver (iCS) insulated and wound to exacting standards. Improvements in modern metallurgy and dielectric technology yielding increased conductivity have resulted in the need to completely redesign their reference line, reducing the needed amount of signal conductors while reducing distortion and capacitance. Asymmetric grounding is now utilized in their interconnect cables, while a Cross Balanced Construction is used in the power cords. Improved conductivity is also a benefit for the review network cable, considering its need for a small, isolated multi-conductor topology.

So once again no longer are small niche streaming services the exclusive handlers of 'lossy' vintage 1980s CD-quality (16-bit/44.1kHz) and circa 2000 lossless high-resolution (24-bit/88.1kHz and higher) sound quality. We're also finally free from the doomed / proprietary lossy formats like MP3pro / MQA and MP3 / etc variants. This is the best time to easily discover new music with a simple click or two. For truly old guys, am sure you remember the book within the back on the physical music store with colored pages that had text list after text list with tens of thousands of albums you could order… if their music distributor could even get that rare album you want! Now it's all just a few clicks away! Thank goodness today we music lovers don't have to endure that scenario anymore. Am sure we all agree that these are the best days to be a music lover.

Flashback: Florida International Audio Expo 2024 Show Report

Jun 19, 2024

It is easy to get distracted by the equipment at an audio show. Being my first show in several decades it was a bit overwhelming at times. Yet what is really at the heart of these shows and why this hobby is growing is a mix of the love of music, the passion and emotions music brings us. Music, like a good meal, should take us places and bring back memories. This weekend I had several of these reminders. Adding to the joy of the weekend was meeting the people creating art with soldering irons and other materials, making some new friends, running across old ones, and being able to finally meet a friend after three decades of talking. That sense of memory came very early on Friday.

TIDAL Removes MQA And Sony 360 Reality Audio

Jun 18, 2024

TIDAL, a music streaming platform that has offered hi-res music files for years, is removing the proprietary music formats MQA and Sony's 360 Reality Audio on July 24th. As many Hi-Res Audio enthusiasts know, FLAC is a long-trusted and known lossless audio standard. FLAC is also royalty-free, plays on all modern devices, plus there are no added licensing costs to encode / decode proprietary file types. According to TIDAL, "For stereo sound, FLAC was chosen as the format we'll support going forward because it is open source – meaning any artist can deliver their music in high quality directly to TIDAL without the involvement of a third party. This makes it easier for their fans to experience music in the highest possible sound quality on all their devices." And while music lovers enjoy the longstanding stereo format, modern immersivephiles can enjoy Dolby Atmos as the chosen format on TIDAL....

The Intro By Art Dudley

Is Tony Rice the "best" guitarist in bluegrass music? Before you scold me for looking at the world that way — stuffing artists into neat little pigeonholes and ranking musicians the way most people rank baseball players — bear in mind that I don't do it half as much as I used to. And since kids can be forgiven for thinking like that, I have let myself off the hook for all those nights I drove around town with my pals, arguing over whose guitar heroes were the "best," like some adolescent McLaughlin Group in plaid flannel shirts. (John McLaughlin: "Who's heavier, Jeff Beck or Jimmy Page?" Jack Germond: "I think it's Jimmy Page." John McLaughlin: "Wrong again. Pat Buchanan, who's heavier...?"). But the title of this month's music feature is a deliberate, and hopefully thought-provoking, reference to the fact that a great many fans, fellow musicians, and critics all consider Tony Rice to be the best in his field. Fans, like teenagers, can be forgiven. In fact it's nice to think that there are any people at all left in this age of music-as-product who can be moved to such praise by a contemporary performer.

HIGH END 2024 At Munich M.O.C. Show Report By Robert May

HIGH END 2024 At Munich M.O.C. Show Report By Robert May

Jun 15, 2024

Munich's HIGH END 2024 high-performance audio / hi-fi event has come and gone. As usual, the show was packed, both with audio gear and with audiophiles. Even in four days, two for trade, and two for the public, it was only possible to skim the surface of the exhibits, both active demos and static displays, that covered the expanse of the Munich MOC exhibition space. The overall impression after those four immersive days is of an extremely active industry, creating products of exceptional fit and finish, all in the service of seeking the best in audio. In the active demos, there was much commonality in the aural presentation of state-of-the-art audio systems – great transparency, details, and presence, with the best showing more than a modicum of soundstage depth and dimensionality....

Review: Nagra Classic DAC II, PSU Power Supply, And VFS Review

Review: Nagra Classic DAC II, PSU Power Supply, And VFS Review

Jun 15, 2024

In January 2021, I was fortunate to review Nagra's Tube DAC and Classic PSU power supply. In my review, I said that the owners of this vacuum tube Hi-Res Audio DAC will be able to appreciate the "sonic glory" of this "high-performance component." So, I was not surprised that the Nagra Tube DAC and its PSU power supply were awarded Enjoy The Music.com's Best Of 2021 Award. After I finished the review, I was not psyched to return the $40,900 package consisting of the Nagra Tube DAC, Classic PSU power supply, and VFS Classic base to the distributor. I was captivated by the sound quality this digital front end contributed to my system. My reference DAC, an EMM Labs DA2, is no slouch, but this Nagra Tube DAC package costs twice as much....

TBT: Aavik I-180 Integrated Stereo Amplifier Review

TBT: Aavik I-180 Integrated Stereo Amplifier Review

Jun 13, 2024

With the integrated amplifier from the entry-level 180 series, Aavik took a radical turn: leaving behind heavy castles of aluminum in favor of natural materials and shapes derived from musical instruments. Aavik is the electronics side of a company-triumvirate, the other two being Børresen as a loudspeaker brand and Ansuz as a supplier of cables and accessories. Regular STEREO readers might be familiar with Aavik thanks to the impressive U-300 integrated amplifier equipped with a phono stage and DAC. Or maybe also due to the D-180 DAC or R-180 phono preamp, which has already received excellent reviews recently.

TBT: The White House Forgotten Vinyl LP Recording Library

Jun 13, 2024

A donation from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) to the Nixon White House, the White House Recording Library was comprised of 2000 LPs, and overseen by a committee of scholars, journalists, and musicians. The library was then stored away and forgotten. John Chuldenko, the grandson of President Jimmy Carter, recalls hearing stories of the collection and began his search to uncover the lost music. He shares his quest and discovery with White House Historical Association President Stewart McLaurin.

Glastonbury Festival 2024 June 26th Through 30th

The very first music Festival was held the day after Jimi Hendrix passed. It marked the beginnings of a music festival at the Bath & West Showground, which then inspired Michael Eavis to commence his own music event, yet on a smaller scale. Today, the Glastonbury Festival brings many thousands of music fans and their families together to enjoy the music. Due to tremendous popularity of this exciting music event, Glastonbury Festival 2024 tickets are already sold out. Dua Lipa will bring her special Pyramid Stage debut as the Friday night headliner, which will also showcase both LCD Soundsystem and PJ Harvey too....

Physical Media Music Formats For Audiophiles

Physical Media Music Formats For Audiophiles

Jun 11, 2024

All physical audio formats are trying for the same success LP had with the 'vinyl revival'. But why are they still popular? Someone buying a CD is spending more on a digital file than they would spend streaming a more high-resolution online counterpart....

Simaudio MOON 641 Integrated Amplifier And 681 Network Player / DAC Review

Simaudio MOON 641 Integrated Amplifier And 681 Network Player / DAC Review

Jun 10, 2024

Last year, I had the pleasure of reviewing MOON's 250i V2 integrated amplifier. Even though its output is "only" 50 Watts per channel, I praised it, concluding, "I felt a connection to the music that passed through this integrated amplifier, as it belied its price." The MOON 250i V2 is priced five times less than the integrated amp reviewed here but with a third less output power. The MOON 641 integrated amplifier and the 681 network player/DAC are both part of MOON's NOŘTH Collection. From reading about them on the MOON website, I've learned that they are not simply new audio components but "a testament to MOON's commitment to pushing the envelope of audio technology. They are designed to deliver an unmatched listening experience in clarity and depth."...

Different Listening Perspectives In Audio

Different Listening Perspectives In Audio

Jun 09, 2024

I Recently attended a very successful AXPONA (Audio Expo North America) 2024 edition in Chicago, IL, where I was pleasantly surprised with the vibrant showcase of audio systems that filled the largest number of rooms in the history of this show. Hundreds of rooms with lots of innovative speakers to discover (some doing their premiere here, instead of waiting for the High End show in Munich), but also lots of new electronics, including many network audio streamers, which were clearly the most popular audio source, followed in a distant second by vinyl and CD — which are both mandatory as many attendees bring their own physical media to listen to for reference....

Avantgarde Acoustic UNO SD Hornspeaker Review

Avantgarde Acoustic UNO SD Hornspeaker Review

Jun 08, 2024

I've been listening to Frank Zappa's 1973 album Over-Nite Sensation, credited to the band Frank Zappa And The Mothers, since I was a pre-teen. My first copy was bought new at the mall, a domestic pressing on the Discreet Music record label. For those unfamiliar with Over-Nite Sensation, it is a showcase for not only Frank Zappa's complex musical compositions but also the musical talents of his band members.... When listening to this album during the review period of the Avantgarde UNO SD I was convinced that this album possessed every positive sonic trait I could have ever hoped for. If you have ever heard a rock band play live (and I hope you have), with the volume of my linestage set to nice and loud, the bass response of the UNO SD came awfully close to replicating the real thing.

Herb Reichert's Casual Reactions: The Need To Party = Potential Difference

Herb Reichert's Casual Reactions: The Need To Party = Potential Difference

Jun 08, 2024

About ten years ago, I decided to try to learn electronics so I could build my own amps. I bought a book called Electronics Made Simple. A week later, I had to buy a book called Mathematics Made Simple. It seemed I couldn't learn electronics without mastering some math concepts. Woe to a misspent youth! If I could have bought Kenn Amdahl's book There Are No Electrons: Electronics for Earthlings, I would have known that an amateur can understand electronics better than a pro-without doing a single calculation. When someone suggested that I review a book where the tireless "need to party" of imaginary beings called "little greenies'' represented voltage, I thought I was hitting a premature journalistic bottom. To my surprise, I learned an amazing amount rethinking what I already knew, things that I had learned the hard way. It works like this: the chicks buy the kegs of beer and turn up their radios. The brothers hear that rock and roll, get in their little green cars, and motivate toward the music. That's current.

Why Music? Roger Skoff writes about the most basic question of all.

Jun 06, 2024

Many years ago, when I had a different audio company, I was absolutely shocked – something that really doesn't happen very often – when one of my dealers told me that he didn't like music. At first, I thought that I must have heard him wrong or misunderstood what he said and that it must be some particular piece of music or some style or instrument that he didn't like. But, when I asked him what he meant by that, and to please clarify, he told me straight-out that he found music of any kind to be annoying and didn't like to listen to it.

Words? Music? Both? Neither? What Do You Listen For?

Words? Music? Both? Neither? What Do You Listen For?

Jun 03, 2024

I recently saw something on Facebook that caused me to do some serious thinking – not on the subject of music, but that, as I hope you'll agree, is still perfectly applicable to our music listening. It's just one simple sentence: "I never said she stole my money" – but, as the person who posted it pointed out, it can have seven entirely different meanings, depending on which one of the seven words making it up you choose to put the emphasis on: For example, "I never said she stole my money" means something different from "I never said she stole my money", which means something different from "I never said she stole my money", which means something different from "I never said she stole my money", and so on, through the entire sentence, with each new emphasis creating a whole new meaning.

World Premiere Review! Acora Acoustics QRC 2 Floorstanding Loudspeaker Review

Jun 02, 2024

Val Cora must have spotted my press pass when I first encountered their SRB two-way stand-mounted monitor at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest show back in 2019. He encouraged me to take a closer look and listen as I didn't seem particularly interested. It was my subconscious fear of tipping over heavy stone or aluminum speakers that I later traced back to a childhood trauma incident. Fast forward to 2023 and I've become one of Acora Acoustics' biggest fans, typically including them among the Best Rooms awards in my show reports....

We have finalized our in-depth AXPONA show coverage and are still quite busy adding to our very extensive HIGH END 2024 report. Roger Skoff's editorial 'Words? Music? Both? Neither? What Do You Listen For?' asks you which is more important when listening to a song. Even with classical music, where every note to be played by every individual instrument is written down and unchanging, isn't every different performance by every orchestra or every conductor still different! With so much effort going towards show coverage, we still found time to review the impressive Acora Acoustics QRC 2 floorstanding loudspeaker. We also have the North America premiere review of Simaudio's MOON 641 Integrated Amplifier and 681 Network Player / DAC. All this and much more inside EnjoyTheMusic.com's June 2024 Review Magazine.

TBT: SVS SB-2000 Active Subwoofer Review

TBT: SVS SB-2000 Active Subwoofer Review

May 30, 2024

At times I must come off as some sort of audio-curmudgeon, such as when I became upset when I noted some audiophiles calling a component a preamplifier rather than a line stage. There have been other times, too, that I've gotten upset over someone using what I consider the incorrect nomenclature for an audio component or part. Thankfully, I've gotten over that preamplifier versus line stage episode. But I'm still working on the fact that some sell speakers that they call "subwoofers" yet don't go below 20 Hz. "Sub" what?

TBT: Sennheiser HD 660 S Over-Ear Headphone Review

May 30, 2024

Updating a much-loved product like the Sennheiser HD 650 is a tricky task. But having spent nearly 75 years in the audio business, Sennheiser understands the importance of reading the tealeaves. The personal audio industry is in a period of tremendous growth and no single segment is growing faster than the portable devices category. So with that, Sennheiser made a bold move. While many companies would have left well enough alone, Sennheiser took one of their most popular products, the somewhat hard-to-drive HD 650, and updated it with and easier to drive design.

As Washington DC's premier high-performance audio event, the Capital Audiofest (CAF) is set to take place at the Hilton Rockville (Maryland) from November 8th through 10th. Families can casually stroll from room to room listening to music, auditioning gear, and browsing many bins of vinyl LP records, CDs, and hi-fi accessories. During the evenings, CAF 2024 will have live music in the bar area.

Avantgarde Acoustic UNO SD Hornspeaker Review

Avantgarde Acoustic UNO SD Hornspeaker Review

May 27, 2024

Now and then, I joke that I am happy my linestage has a volume control (an attenuator), as an actual rock band playing in my medium-sized listening would be sonically overwhelming. Even when listening at a low volume, I was blown away by the UNO SD's reproduction of bass frequencies. Not only did the bass reach sub-sonic levels, but the low frequencies sounded nearly perfect, with a very tight midbass, a mighty sounding deep bass, with a transient response that added to the speakers' realistic portrayal of low-frequency sounds.

FiiO M17 Portable Desktop-Class Music Player Review

FiiO M17 Portable Desktop-Class Music Player Review

May 27, 2024

Regardless of genre, source, or a file's resolution, what I heard from my headphones was the epitome of "audiophile sound quality." Yes, that description has become a bit of a cliché ever since "audiophile sound quality" has been appropriated by the mass-market audio industry. But I'd be wasting the reader's time going through each recording and attempting to elaborate on what I heard, such as its slamming, deep bass, transparent midrange, and sparkling treble. This is because the recording determined the FiiO M17's sound quality and which headphones I was using much more than the sound quality provided by the M17. In other words, FiiO's M17 sounds exceptionally transparent. I can think of no greater praise for an audio component.

Linkwitz LX521 Loudspeaker Review

Linkwitz LX521 Loudspeaker Review

May 25, 2024

Overall, the tonal balance was quite even with the bass being even stronger than the Acora or my Kharma speakers, if not quite as resolved as the Acora. The tone of the LCH subwoofers I have used with the Acora and the Kharma speakers was a bit more palpable than the Linkwitz subs. If you are a serious bass-head you may want to consider adding subwoofers or possibly tone controls but I think most people will be very happy with the Linkwitz in standard configuration. Your listening room will likely be smaller than the open floor plan of my home which soaks up a lot of bass energy.

Nagra Classic DAC II, PSU Power Supply, And VFS Review

Nagra Classic DAC II, PSU Power Supply, And VFS Review

May 25, 2024

The Nagra Classic DAC II sorted out all the instruments and vocals on this album, so it was much easier to tell why this album was honored with this award. Despite a healthy amount of compression applied to each voice and instrument and the entire recording, their knotty compositions came to life in my listening room, surrounding me with its vast soundstage. The bass on this album reached as low as my system would allow, shaking my body, listening room, and ear-brain. Cymbal crashes were separated from the other voices and instruments, appearing at the top of the soundstage nearest my room's ceiling. I could imagine drawing a line around Matt Pike's vocals that appeared in space between the two speakers.

TBT: Rotel Michi X3 Integrated Amplifier Review

TBT: Rotel Michi X3 Integrated Amplifier Review

May 23, 2024

This has been one of the hardest reviews I have ever done because the MichiX3 integrated amplifier really surprised me. Out of the box and into my system it performed so well that I was at a loss for words. Not so much as in spectacular audiophile terms, but because it just went straight to work and played music, all kinds of music, and from all kinds of sources in such a relaxed but inviting manner, critique just kind of went out the window. But unless you have been living under an audiophile rock for the last few years, you probably have seen, even in passing, a review of the latest Rotel amplifiers. In fact, I have recently written about their neat A14MK.2. A solid performer, the sound signature of that unit being quite different from its big brother, the Michi X3.

TBT: Wells Audio Commander Level II Vacuum Tube Line Stage Review

TBT: Wells Audio Commander Level II Vacuum Tube Line Stage Review

May 23, 2024

A little while ago I reviewed the Wells Audio Cipher. I asked Jeff Wells, the owner of Wells Audio, to tell me more about the Cipher, and he more or less described it as his preamp circuit, with a single fixed input coming from the DAC. I was so impressed with the smooth analog nature of his DAC that I asked him if I could review his preamp. A few months later, a Commander Level II arrived at my door. The Commander Level II is Jeff Wells' mid-range preamp. The standard level I, sells for $3999, the level II (my unit) sells for $9000, and the Level III sells for $18,000. Each version has the same base design and circuit, and each upgrade introduces higher end and more expensive discrete parts into the build process. According to Wells Audio these improvements lower the noise floor, increase the dynamic range, and dramatically improve the experience.

Great Memories Of AXPONA 2024 Show Report By Music Professor Michael Bump

Great Memories Of AXPONA 2024 Show Report By Music Professor Michael Bump

May 21, 2024

Considering the ever-expanding international stage of high-end audio shows such as HIGH END 2024 in Munich, Tokyo, Bangkok, the UK, Poland, etc., as well as those in the States such as the inaugural Southwest Audio Fest in Dallas, the annual Florida International Audio Expo in Tampa, Pacific Audio Fest in Seattle, and Capital Audio Fest in Washington D.C., I sense we are welcoming a 'renaissance' (no pun intended) in high-end audio. I sense it's also fair to recognize that this global, post-pandemic interest represents a not-so-elite multitude of demographics. This year's Audio Expo of North America (AXPONA 2024), held once again at the Renaissance Hotel & Convention Center in Schaumburg, Illinois, from April 12th through April 14th, served as an excellent melting pot to this experience.

It also features the wonderfully enchanting Black Swan, composer Bright Sheng's orchestration of the Brahms Intermezzo for solo piano, op. 118, No. 2, plus the beloved and spectacular Arnold Schoenberg orchestration of the Piano Quartet No. 1 in G Minor, op. 25.

Incredible Sound Systems At HIGH END 2024 In Munich

May 17, 2024

Since many of you are very familiar with details concerning the HIGH END show in Munich, let’s jump right into it, shall we? Vertere took a room in the Motorworld across the road from the main show to reveal a high-end phono preamplifier dubbed CALON. This takes a multi-layer approach by adding gain to the signal before and after RIAA EQ, with both gain stages being adjustable. The idea is that a stronger signal will be less prone to picking up noise during the filtering. Vertere has also added a subsonic filter because company founder Touraj Moghaddam considers such things to be useful in making the lives of both amplifiers and loudspeakers easier, not having to amplify signals below 20Hz is good for amps and not having pumping cones is good for speakers.

Munich HIGH END 2024 Show Was Grueling... And Fun!

Munich HIGH END 2024 Show Was Grueling... And Fun!

May 17, 2024

Munich's HIGH END 2024 high-performance audio / hi-fi event has come and gone. As usual, the show was packed, both with audio gear and with audiophiles. Even in four days, two for trade, and two for the public, it was only possible to skim the surface of the exhibits, both active demos and static displays, that covered the expanse of the Munich MOC exhibition space. The overall impression after those four immersive days is of an extremely active industry, creating products of exceptional fit and finish, all in the service of seeking the best in audio. In the active demos, there was much commonality in the aural presentation of state-of-the-art audio systems – great transparency, details, and presence, with the best showing more than a modicum of soundstage depth and dimensionality.

TBT: Karan Acoustics KAS 600 Stereo Amp And KAL Reference MK3 Preamp Review

TBT: Karan Acoustics KAS 600 Stereo Amp And KAL Reference MK3 Preamp Review

May 16, 2024

It seems like a lifetime ago I reviewed the Karan Acoustics KAS 450 stereo amplifier. My conclusion was "This is an amplifier I could live with for the long haul," and was planning on adding it to my system. If not for a train wreck of an experience with a speaker manufacturer who took a $20,000 down payment for new speakers after I sold my reference, I would have happily added the KAS 450 to the system. Failing to fulfill his promise to deliver my new speaker in eight weeks, I had to sell one of my amplifiers in order to fill in the speaker gap left for the next 10 months.

Rogue Audio's RP-9 is the latest flagship preamplifier from the ingenious designs of the American manufacturing workshop of Mark O'Brien.  Having an interest in doing this review of the new RP-9 was a simple decision as a long-time user of the Rogue RP-7.  I have been using the remarkable powerhouse Rogue Apollo Dark Amps for several years as both a sonic and output upgrade to my previously owned Rogue 180 Amplifiers that were used to run Magnepan 3.6 speakers.

Oligarch-Grade Products Will Continue

Oligarch-Grade Products Will Continue

May 13, 2024

Anniversary issues are always a time to look back, but it's also a good time to look forward and try to predict what the next few years will look like. Such predictions are prone to a lot of guesswork, and there are no spoilers, no giving away secrets, and no Tarot cards were harmed in the making of these dimly lit gazes into the near future. In the high-end, the trend for oligarch-grade products looks set to continue. Whenever we think audio has reached its price ceiling, someone builds a longer ladder! Most super-high-end systems top out at somewhere around £1m-£1.2m at present. I think in the next few years, we will see several systems that reach £2m, and possibly even more. Moving out of the stratosphere, there does appear to be some divergence in design between the three main markets of the US, Europe, and Asia. While that sounds like the most sweeping of generalizations (what holds in one Asian or European country doesn't hold for them all), the broad trends remain.

If you are a member of the Head-Fi community, Chord has been part of your life for the past decade with its award-winning, and often groundbreaking products. While many of the British manufacturers' products are very expensive, there are a growing number below $1,000 that merit serious attention from both headphone enthusiasts and music listeners looking to assemble a first-class system for either the home or desktop. Products like the Chord Mojo 2 offer a level of technical sophistication you don't see in very many products in the price range or even above it.

TBT: Schiit Mani MM / MC Phono Stage Review

TBT: Schiit Mani MM / MC Phono Stage Review

May 09, 2024

To witness, the soundstage of the Mani (as well as most solid state gear) is foreshortened. The width is as good as it gets with my speakers aligned on the long wall—which is to say excellent. But with the tight bass and higher energy in the treble replacing the rolled off focus in those areas in my tube phono stage, plus the holographic nature of tube gear in general, the Mani presents a wide, very well defined, evenly lighted soundstage that is shallower in depth than my reference. The other area that differs is the tonal color and shading that tube gear provides. The Mani is slightly less rich in tonal color and nuance than my tube reference. How much less, you ask? Well, let's just say that it's a lot less than the $6370 price difference. But unless you are really new to the High End, you already know about diminishing returns.

Review: Linkwitz LX521 Loudspeaker

Review: Linkwitz LX521 Loudspeaker

May 08, 2024

It is no accident the Linkwitz LX521 speaker eventually landed in my listening room. It would have happened much sooner if I had not been so busy. The three Best Rooms awards you may have seen in their ads have resulted from my very favorable impressions at AXPONA (2022 and 2023) plus Capital Audiofest. I've been a big fan of open baffle speakers since my world premiere reviews of Tekton Designs' OB 4.5, PureAudioProject's Trio 15 TB, and Treehaus Audiolab's Phantom of Luxury speaker. Other major proponents of open baffle design include Nola and the now-named Clayton Shaw Acoustic Lab. And more recently, Songer Audio on the West Coast, plus a few I've likely missed.

Review: Nagra Classic DAC II, PSU Power Supply, And VFS

Review: Nagra Classic DAC II, PSU Power Supply, And VFS

May 08, 2024

My reference DAC, an EMM Labs DA2, is no slouch, but this Nagra Tube DAC package costs twice as much.

New Hi-Fi Gear Is Pushing The Boundaries

New Hi-Fi Gear Is Pushing The Boundaries

May 07, 2024

Each and every year, new features and technologies arrive to push the boundaries of consumer electronics further than the year previous. Very few, however, tend to enrich our daily lives immediately, whether that's because they aren't instantly adopted by the masses or simply aren't useful on such a frequent basis. Thinking about how my listening habits have changed in recent years, I've realized that one fledgling feature has played more of a role in it than any other: Tidal Connect. For the uninitiated, Tidal Connect lets you 'cast' the service's catalogue to compatible audio devices from within the Tidal app, with the songs streamed from the internet instead of locally on your device.

Music & Audio / Hi-Fi: No Truth. Just Joy.

Music & Audio / Hi-Fi: No Truth. Just Joy.

May 05, 2024

My experience of over three decades in the audio sector reinforced a conviction that no matter how hard we try, there is no way to achieve truth in audio, just joy. And that the latter is completely independent of the former. This is a fundamental principle on my standing about audio technologies. I care about good audio experiences and I believe that our efforts should be focused on eliminating bad sound, not so much about achieving exceptionally great fidelity — that illusive quest. Do I have a low bar when it comes to audio experiences? I just know when I find joy listening to music.

What Kind Of Music Do You Like?

What Kind Of Music Do You Like?

May 04, 2024

Many a long year ago a friend of mine asked me what kind of speakers he ought to buy. Complimented by his confidence in my judgment and wanting to be helpful, I asked him some questions to help me figure out what might be best for him. One of the first was "How much do you want to spend?" To which I got "It doesn't matter; whatever it costs." I should have known better – he was the local Maserati dealer, quite well off, and really could afford just about anything I might suggest. Next, I tried "What kind of music do you listen to? " and was told "Everything; I like it all, as long as it's good." Other questions about all the usual hi-fi criteria – imaging, soundstaging, timbre, transient attack and decay, harmonic richness, the whole thing – got equally vague answers until I finally asked him "Is there anything at all that you particularly like or want in the music you listen to?", That's when I hit the "jackpot": "Loud." He said, "I like it really loud!"
