Design Considerations

Before installing your DIY wood ceiling beams, consider the following design aspects:

  • Beam Spacing - The distance between beams can significantly impact the overall look. Common spacing ranges from 12 to 24 inches on center.
  • Beam Depth - Deeper beams create a more dramatic effect, while shallower beams offer a subtler touch.
  • Finishing - Staining, painting, or leaving the wood natural can greatly influence the final appearance. Consider the overall color scheme and style of your room.

Another 150 x 25 piece for the bottom double mitre (45 deg). Bottom piece should be the width of the ceiling piece plus 2x thickness of the wood. Wood glue and nail to form a U shape hollow beam. Distress beam with jigsaw and wire brush attachment for drill. Then give everything a sand with 120 grit sandpaper. U beam should slot over piece screwed into ceiling joists, nail gun and screw. Stain in a colour of your choice. 1. Measure and mark the ceiling where you want the beams to go. Ensure they're level and evenly spaced.
  2. Cut the beams to the desired length using a miter saw or circular saw.
  3. Attach ceiling beam hangers or joist hangers to the ceiling joists. These will support the weight of the beams and make installation easier.
  4. Lay the beam on the hangers and secure it with screws or nails. Ensure the beam is level and properly supported.
  5. Repeat the process for each beam, working your way across the ceiling.
  6. Once all beams are installed, fill any gaps or holes with wood filler and sand smooth.
  7. Apply your desired finish - stain, paint, or leave natural - and enjoy your stunning new ceiling!
