Types of Floor Sanders Available at Lowe's

Lowe's offers two main types of floor sanders for rent: drum sanders and orbital sanders. Each has its own advantages and is suited to different types of flooring projects.

Drum Sanders

Drum sanders are powerful and efficient, making them ideal for large areas and professional use. They feature a rotating drum with sandpaper attached, which sands the floor as it moves across the surface. Drum sanders are available in different sizes, with larger drums capable of handling wider planks. Some models also come with dust collection systems to help keep your workspace clean.

Orbital Sanders

Orbital sanders are lighter and more compact, making them easier to maneuver in tight spaces. They use a random orbital motion to sand the floor, which helps prevent swirl marks and provides a smoother finish. Orbital sanders are great for smaller projects, edge work, and refinishing hardwood floors in homes.

Using a floor sander can be dangerous if not done correctly. Always follow these safety tips and guidelines:

• Wear appropriate safety gear, including safety glasses, ear protection, and a dust mask.
• Familiarize yourself with the sander's operation and safety features before using it.
• Start with a coarse grit sandpaper (e.g., 36- or 40-grit) to remove major imperfections and switch to a finer grit (e.g., 80- or 100-grit) for the final pass.
• Work in manageable sections, sanding with the grain of the wood and overlapping each pass slightly.
• Keep the sander moving at all times to prevent gouging the floor. Never force the sander or apply excessive pressure.
