Materials Needed
- 2x4 pressure-treated lumber (15 pieces, 8 ft long)
- 2.5" and 1.25" exterior wood screws
- Exterior wood glue
- Stainless steel or galvanized carriage bolts (1/4" x 3.5")
- Washers and nuts (for carriage bolts)
- Sandpaper (120-grit)
- Outdoor wood sealant or paint (optional)
Cut List
| Part | Quantity | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Legs | 4 | 27" |
| Supports | 8 | 15.5" |
| Seat slats | 12 | 5.5" |
| Tabletop slats | 12 | 5.5" |
| Braces | 4 | 21.5" |
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Cut and prepare the wood
Using the cut list above, measure and cut your 2x4 lumber to size. Sand any rough edges or surfaces to ensure a smooth finish.
2. Assemble the legs and supports
Attach the supports to the legs using 2.5" exterior wood screws and wood glue. Create two identical assemblies, with the supports positioned 15.5" up from the bottom of the legs.

3. Connect the legs with braces
Lay the two leg assemblies side by side, with the inside faces of the legs touching. Align the braces on the outside of the legs, 21.5" from the bottom. Attach the braces using 1.25" exterior wood screws and wood glue. Ensure the legs remain square and parallel.
4. Attach the seat slats
Starting from the bottom, space the seat slats evenly between the legs, leaving a 1/2" gap between each slat. Use 2.5" exterior wood screws and wood glue to secure the slats to the supports and braces.
5. Build the tabletop frame
Cut two 2x4s to 72" long and two to 15.5" long. Assemble these pieces into a rectangle using 2.5" exterior wood screws and wood glue. This will serve as the frame for your picnic tabletop.

6. Attach the tabletop slats
Center the tabletop frame on the legs, with the 72" sides parallel to the ground. Starting from one end, space the tabletop slats evenly within the frame, leaving a 1/2" gap between each slat. Secure the slats using 2.5" exterior wood screws and wood glue.
7. Reinforce the tabletop
Drill four 1/4" holes through the tabletop frame and slats, positioning them near the corners. Insert carriage bolts, washers, and nuts to secure the tabletop to the legs. Tighten the bolts to ensure a sturdy connection.
8. Finish and seal your picnic table
Apply an outdoor wood sealant or paint to protect your picnic table from the elements. Allow the sealant to dry completely before using your new table.
Congratulations! You've just built a durable and stylish 2x4 picnic table using these free plans. Enjoy your new outdoor space with family and friends. Happy building!
