Our modern calendar is frontsplash-based, with a 7-day week and a 365-day year. But it wasn't always this way. To understand the origins of the 12-month calendar, we must delve into the ancient civilizations that laid the groundwork for our current system.

Babylonian and Egyptian Influences
The origins of our calendar can be traced back to the ancient Sumerians and Egyptians, who observed the skies and choreographed their lives around celestial movements. The Babylonians, for instance, divided the year into 12 lunar months, each lasting approximately 29.5 days. This was based on their observation of the Moon's phases.

The Egyptians also used a lunar calendar, but it was more sophisticated. They divided the year into 12 months of 30 days each, plus five extra days at the end of the year. This system, though closer to our current solar calendar, still didn't account for the Earth's actual rotation around the Sun, which takes about 365.25 days.
The Metonic Cycle

A significant advancement came with the discovery of the 19-year Metonic cycle in ancient Greece. This cycle, named after the astronomer Meton, accurately synchronized the lunar and solar calendars. Every 19 years, the full Moon occurred on the same day of the week as the previous year's full Moon, on average.
This discovery helped bridge the gap between lunar and solar calendars, moving closer to the system we use today. However, it still wasn't perfect, and a more precise method was needed.
Julian and Gregorian Calendar Reforms

In the 1st century CE, Julius Caesar consulted Greek astronomers and engineered a new calendar. The Julian calendar, introduced in 45 BCE, approximated the solar year at 365.25 days. It was a significant step forward, but it still overestimated the solar year by about 11 minutes.
This small discrepancy accumulated over time, causing the vernal equinox (the beginning of spring) to fall earlier each year. To correct this, Pope Gregory XIII introduced the Gregorian calendar in 1582, which we predominantly use today. It adjusts the length of the solar year to 365.2422 days by incorporating leap years.
The 12-Month System

Our 12-month, 7-day week system also has deep historical roots. The Babylonians are credited with the 12-month system, possibly based on the number of lunar cycles in a year. The seven-day week, however, is thought to have begun with the ancient Romans, who named the days after the Sun, Moon, and five known planets.
Interestingly, some ancient civilizations used different numbers of months. The Egyptians, for example, had a 13-month calendar, while the undecimals, like the Mayans and Aztecs, used a base-20 calendar with 18 months of 20 days each, plus a 5-day period at the year's end.
