The triangle inequality says a detour is never shorter than going straight. ‖u + v‖ ≤ ‖u‖ + ‖v‖ Equality holds exactly when u and v are parallel and point the same way; in the general case the direct vector u + v is strictly shorter than following u then v. The same statement reappears for real numbers as |a + b| ≤ |a| + |b| and for integrals as |∫f| ≤ ∫|f|, with the reverse form ‖u‖ − ‖v‖ ≤ ‖u − v‖ often the more useful of the two. This single inequality is what makes a distance a distance.

Triangle Inequality Complex Numbers
Pascal’s triangle is a geometric arrangement of binomial coefficients. The entry C(n,r) counts how many ways r objects can be chosen from a set of n, giving every number in the triangle a combinatorial meaning. The addition rule follows by separating those choices into two groups. A chosen object is either included or excluded, producing C(n-1,r-1)+C(n-1,r)=C(n,r). The triangle is symmetric because choosing r objects is equivalent to choosing the n-r objects left out. Each row supplies the coefficients of a binomial expansion, and its sum is 2^n because a set of n elements has 2^n possible subsets. These coefficients are used throughout probability, combinatorics, algebra, and statistical modeling.
