University - STANDARD DEVIATION (SD) Standard deviation measures how spread out the data are around the mean (average). It shows the typical distance of observations from the mean. WHAT SD TELLS US: • Small SD → values are close to the mean. • Large SD → values are widely dispersed. • SD = 0 → all observations are identical. • SD is expressed in the same units as the original data. • SD alone does NOT tell you whether data are normally distributed. EXAMPLE: Two groups can have the same mean but different SDs. Group A: Mean = 70, SD = 3.2 → values are close to 70. Group B: Mean = 70, SD = 12.8 → values are more widely spread. COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS: ❌ SD is not the same as the mean. ❌ A larger SD does not mean the mean is larger. ❌ SD does not tell you the shape of the distribution. ❌ SD is not the same as variance. Variance = SD² TAKEAWAY: Standard deviation tells you how much the data vary or spread around the mean. It is a key measure of variability in research and data analysis. | Facebook

Two numbers fix the whole normal curve: where it sits and how wide it spreads. f(x) = 1/(σ√(2π)) · e^(-(x-μ)²/(2σ²)) The mean μ equals the average x̄ and marks the peak, while the standard deviation σ sets the half-width of the bell. The cumulative form F(x) = ∫₋∞ˣ (1/(σ√(2π))) e^(-(t-μ)²/(2σ²)) dt accumulates that density from the left, so f gives the height at a point and F gives the probability below it.

Compare sample and population spread with a complete worked statistics example. Data 4, 8, 6, 5 and 7 have mean 6 and squared deviations totaling 10: sample variance is 2.5, while the whole-population variance is 2. Review standard deviation units, IQR fences and an example that flags 25 above an upper fence of 14. Choose summaries with attention to extreme values and investigate before removing an observation.
