Creating eye-catching text effects, such as bubble text, can elevate your designs in Adobe Illustrator. Bubbles have a playful and engaging quality, making them perfect for invitations, social media graphics, or children's illustrations. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to make bubble text in Illustrator.
Before we dive in, ensure you're familiar with basic Illustrator tools like the Selection Tool (V), the Direct Selection Tool (A), and the Pen Tool (P). Let's get started!
Creating the Bubble Shape
To create bubble text, we'll first need to create the bubble shape. You can draw it manually, or use the built-in tools for a quick start.
For this tutorial, we'll use the Star Tool (Y) to create a simple bubble. Click the Star Tool, then drag in your artboard to create a 5-point star. Hold down the Shift key while dragging to ensure the star is regular.
Convert the Star to a Bubble
Next, we'll convert the star into a more bubble-like shape. Select the star, then go to the Object menu and choose Path > Un groep (Break Apart). This separates the star into its individual components.
Select the top point of the star by clicking it with the Direct Selection Tool. Then, drag this point down to create the askew top of the bubble. With the point still selected, go to the Selection menu and choose Same > Width and Height to keep the sides straight.
Refine the Bubble Shape
Now, let's refine the bubble shape. With the Selection Tool, drag a copy of the bubble and position it next to the original. Then, press Ctrl + B (Windows) or Command + B (Mac) to enter Shape Builder mode.

Now, add some color and style to your text. You can use the Character panel to adjust the font, size, and color. To give your text a nice, round edge, set the Stroke to a color, and adjust the Stroke Size to around 3 points.
