As we step into 2022, the world of interior design is buzzing with exciting new trends, and the kitchen is no exception. This year, we're seeing a shift towards warmer, more inviting color palettes, as well as a renewed interest in natural materials and sustainable design. If you're planning a kitchen remodel or simply looking to refresh your space with a new color scheme, you're in the right place. Let's explore the top new kitchen colors for 2022 and how you can incorporate them into your space.
Warm Neutrals: The New Kitchen Staple
Neutral colors have long been a staple in kitchen design, but in 2022, we're seeing a move away from cool, sterile whites and grays towards warmer, more inviting hues. Think soft beiges, warm creams, and earthy browns. These colors not only create a cozy atmosphere but also provide a perfect backdrop for pops of color and texture.
To incorporate warm neutrals into your kitchen, consider using them for your cabinetry, walls, or flooring. For a cohesive look, try to stick to a single shade or a subtle ombré effect. To add depth and interest, layer different textures and materials in the same color family, such as wood, stone, and metal.
Jewel Tones: Making a Bold Statement
If you're looking to make a bold statement in your kitchen, consider embracing the jewel tone trend. Rich, vibrant colors like emerald green, sapphire blue, and amethyst purple are making their way into kitchens, adding a touch of luxury and drama to the space.
To incorporate jewel tones into your kitchen, consider using them for accent pieces like bar stools, pendant lights, or kitchenware. For a more daring look, you could paint your cabinets in a deep, jewel-toned hue or use the color for a feature wall. Just be sure to balance the bold color with plenty of neutrals to keep the space from feeling overwhelming.
Earth Tones: Connecting with Nature
In response to our increasingly digital world, there's a growing desire to connect with nature and bring the outdoors in. This is reflected in the rise of earth tone colors in kitchen design. Think soft greens, warm terracottas, and rich, dark blues inspired by the natural world.
To incorporate earth tones into your kitchen, consider using them for your cabinetry, countertops, or backsplash. For a more subtle touch, opt for earth-toned accessories like plants, textiles, and dinnerware. You could also bring in natural materials like wood, stone, or rattan to complement the color scheme.
Dark and Moody: The New Black
Forget the all-white kitchen - dark and moody spaces are having a moment in 2022. Deep, inky blacks, rich navies, and dramatic grays are creating a sense of luxury and sophistication in the kitchen. Plus, dark colors can make a small space feel larger and more dramatic.
To incorporate dark and moody colors into your kitchen, consider using them for your cabinetry, walls, or countertops. To prevent the space from feeling too heavy, balance the dark colors with plenty of light, either from windows or artificial lighting. You could also add in plenty of reflective surfaces, like mirrors or metallic accents, to help bounce light around the room.
Colorful Cabinets: A Pop of Personality
If you're looking to add a pop of personality to your kitchen, consider painting your cabinets in a bold, colorful hue. This trend is all about expressing your individuality and creating a space that's uniquely you.
To incorporate colorful cabinets into your kitchen, consider using a bold color for your lower cabinets and a softer shade for your upper cabinets or vice versa. Alternatively, you could paint your island in a contrasting color to create a focal point in the space. Just be sure to balance the bold color with plenty of neutrals to keep the space from feeling too chaotic.
Two-Tone Cabinets: A Fresh Take on a Classic Trend
Two-tone cabinets have been a popular trend for a few years now, but in 2022, we're seeing a fresh take on this classic look. Instead of the traditional white upper cabinets and dark lower cabinets, designers are experimenting with unexpected color combinations and finishes.
To incorporate two-tone cabinets into your kitchen, consider using a bold color or finish for your upper cabinets and a softer shade for your lower cabinets. Alternatively, you could use two different wood tones or finishes for a more natural look. The key is to create a sense of balance and harmony between the two colors or finishes.

Sustainable Materials: Designing for the Future
As awareness of environmental issues grows, so does the demand for sustainable materials in kitchen design. In 2022, we're seeing a renewed interest in natural, eco-friendly materials like wood, stone, and concrete. These materials not only look beautiful but also have a positive impact on the environment.
To incorporate sustainable materials into your kitchen, consider using them for your countertops, flooring, or cabinetry. You could also opt for second-hand or vintage pieces to reduce waste. To take your eco-friendly kitchen one step further, consider incorporating energy-efficient appliances and water-saving fixtures.
Sustainable Material Spotlight: Terrazzo
Terrazzo, a composite material made of chips of marble, quartz, granite, or glass set in a cement or resin binder, is having a moment in kitchen design. Not only is it incredibly durable and low-maintenance, but it's also highly sustainable, as it can be made from recycled materials. Plus, its unique, speckled pattern adds a touch of warmth and texture to any space.
To incorporate terrazzo into your kitchen, consider using it for your countertops, flooring, or even your backsplash. For a more subtle touch, you could opt for terrazzo-inspired accessories like vases, bowls, or planters.
