Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

St. Paul's On-the-Hill Episcopal Church was officially organized in the St. Paul territorial court house in 1854, and was legally incorporated on December 23, 1856. The first service in the original church building, located at 9th and Olive streets in St. Paul's Lowertown area, took place on December 25, 1857. The convention that organized the Episcopal Diocese of Minnesota was held at St. Paul's in 1858. The church moved in 1912 to its present location at Summit Avenue and Saratoga Street. The parish developed a reputation for establishing missions and new congregations, and was known for its High Church Anglo-Catholic style of worship. The 1912 church building was designed by architect Emmanuel Masqueray, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Saint Paul's On-the-Hill closed in 2015 due to an aging membership and dwindling numbers.
