Major correspondents include Cass Gilbert, Jeremiah C. Donahower, Judson W. Bishop, and Channing Seabury. The collection also includes a glass plate negative and two prints of the painting.

Expand/CollapseBIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Stephen Arnold Douglas Volk was born February 23, 1856 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, the son of Leonard Wells and Emily Clarissa King (Barlow) Volk. He grew up in Chicago, and studied art in Rome and at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1873 to 1879. He served as director of the Minneapolis School of Fine Arts from 1886 to 1893. He was commissioned by the Minnesota Board of State Capitol Commissioners through Cass Gilbert to paint a scene showing the 2nd Minnesota Infantry Regiment at the Battle of Missionary Ridge for the Minnesota State Capitol building. Volk resided in Center Lovell, Maine, retiring in 1925; he died in Fryeburg, Maine on February 7, 1935.
