This report documents how debt and criminal records in Egypt are weaponized for digital extortion against indebted women and formerly incarcerated debtors . Laws exist to protect them from defamation and blackmail, yet many hesitate to file complaints. Once their names appear in Egypt’s official criminal databases `{`known locally as the “system”`}` their past convictions resurface — even if they have served their sentences or were acquitted. Suddenly, a complainant can find herself transformed into the accused.
