Job Summary:
ARIJ is looking for a Full time Web Designer to collaborate on designing website pages, investigative reports, and other digital storytelling materials. The designer will play a key role in translating complex investigations into engaging visual stories through layouts, data visualizations, and interactive elements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design visually appealing and responsive layouts for ARIJ’s website, investigations, and other digital content.
- Create mockups, prototypes, and design assets in collaboration with journalists and developers.
- Ensure designs are consistent with ARIJ’s branding and style guidelines.
- Design and implement scrollytelling layouts and other interactive storytelling formats.
- Produce graphics, banners, maps, and visual content that enhance narrative clarity and impact.
- Build story-related banners and visual assets from scratch for published investigations.
- Collaborate with developers to implement interactive elements (scroll effects, animations, and transitions).
- Design and visualize data using interactive or static charts, maps, and infographics.
- Maintain design accessibility and usability across different screen sizes and devices.
Requirements:
- 2–3 years of proven experience as a Web Designer or in a similar visual storytelling role.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating creativity, data visualization, and digital storytelling.
- Proficiency in Figma, Adobe XD, Illustrator, or Photoshop for layout and visual design.
- Solid understanding of visual storytelling and information design.
- Experience with data visualization tools/libraries such as Datawrapper, Flourish, D3.js or Chart.js.
- Experience with interactive map design using Mapbox, Leaflet.js, or Google Maps API; ability to design and build custom SVG maps without relying on external libraries.
- Strong sense of color theory and visual hierarchy for readability and emotional impact.
- Strong UX/UI knowledge.
- Strong knowledge of responsive design.
- Awareness of accessibility (WCAG) and best practices in visual design for digital publications.
- Understanding of GSAP (ScrollTrigger) or similar animation libraries is a plus.
- Experience in motion design or animation drawing is a plus.
- Good command of both Arabic and English.
- Teamwork and positive team spirit.
- Ability to handle multiple deadlines.
- Ability to work under pressure.
- Adaptability and flexibility.
