Opinion: Why many rounds of burning than Sodom and Gomorah

By Rt. Rev. Prof. Kole Jale William

Juba, South Sudan,

Sep 09, 2021 — I was in critical thinking and looking back and to the present and to the future of South Sudan, I saw in the past the war of Anyanya that killed many people, it’s destruction was counted on human life rather than on property. It was estimated that 2.5 million lives were lost in the war. The peace period was 10 years (1955 – 1972) and (1983 – 2005) when the SPLM/A war started, and 1.7 million lives and properties were lost. These are the wars of 17 years and 21 years respectively.

At the present time people are in the heat of the war of SPLM/A of 13th December 2013 which started 8 years later after the comprehensive peace agreement that was signed between SPLM/A and Khartoum government and it was 2 years after independence of South Sudan from Sudan. The indication of disability to rule ourselves was said by many critics and insults by the Khartoum government “they said, ” see they claim that we are bad but they are not able to lead and rule themselves”. This was known by all, I just recap it.

The war of Anyanya started on 25th May 1955 and ended in 1972 agreement; The war of SPLM/A started on 16th May 1983 and ended in 2005 agreement; The war within SPLM/A started on 15th December 2013 and ended in 2018 and failed to implement key provisions in the agreement and many generals broke out to form many rebel groups. What the hell?

My painful question in my heart is “has South Sudan sinned more than Sodom  and Gomorrah?” Sodom and Gomorrah were burned once because they did terrible sin on earth. Now people are living there but God did not burn them again. Sodom and Gomorrah is the coastal area near Dead Sea where people were adulterous and homosexual offenders. Our sin has grown bigger than the one of Sodom and Gomorrah? At present we see no one is willing to plan for good things or organize good programs but every plan and programs are counting and amounting to suffering and loss of lives. The nation has been on fire many times in these wars but people are organizing and planning for more fire on people. Are human beings becoming firewoods for cooking and boiling evils? I wish one puts himself in the shoes of the poor suffering South Sudanese who are suffering now. If one does this, will you call for more suffering or you call for peace? I hope the call may be for peace.

Many people may blame the government or the rebels but the Bible teaches that if people are doing evil things, their sins may make God to allow suffering to fall on them and no one will pay attention to the cries of the people neither the government nor the rebels listen or international community coming in power to save until people turn faithful to God and he will give his permanent solution. Everyone is to check his own heart and ways of life and repent of every single mistake in life. In this God will come and save the nation but trading accusations and blames on one another is the wisdom of Satan that God hates.

Why South Sudan is now having men calling themselves “Commander In Chiefs?” How many Commander in chiefs does a country need at a time? How many presidents does a country need at a time? If all do not agree that there must be one Commander In Chief and one president and we put the country and the people first, the country will be fighting, killing and devouring one another until every citizen is finished and foreigners will come and enjoy the wealthy treasures God has given South Sudanese. Think about this.

The solution to South Sudan is agreement and working together as children of the same father and mother. One will be president today for his terms stipulated in the Constitution and another one will be president tomorrow and so on and so on. Let everyone who qualifies and thinks he can be president campaign and tell people what he wants to do. If he failed to do so then he must be voted out in the same way he was voted in. All state governors must be voted in and voted out by people. In this way people will try their best to do good and keep on power or you tell the good things you want to do and you come to power. This is the peaceful way without loss of lives or destruction of properties.

South Sudan is more than four times the size of Uganda but has a population of 12 million people only. A tiny country Uganda has a population of 46 million people and is peaceful and there is security for it’s citizens it cares for within and without.

In my stand I see wars and demonstrations as acts of destruction to the nation. The country is not a family of a person that is to be personalized and is not a property that one person owns but every citizen has the right to be a leader of any kind in a right time and the right way and hand it over to another in the right way. This is the answer to my critical thinking. The application of laws in the proper manner that gives rights to citizens makes one to fear doing evil and if someone does wrong thing and he or she does it to South Sudan and is against South Sudan. If laws are fully functional, there is fear and bringing people to court and charging people in courts will create fear and discipline to people than disappearances or torture in secret points that many clams was done and which I can not prove it.

Sodom and Gomorrah were burned ones we burned three times in three wars and let us not keep the fire burning on our heads to finish our vulnerable people. We respect those in authority because the Bible teaches us to do so, so we do respect. Let those in authority give us peace and security and life goes on.
