Juba police issues arrest warrant for Achai Wiir

JUBA – South Sudan police authorities in the country’s capital Juba have issued an arrest warrant against controversial businesswoman and philanthropist Achai Wiir, months after she was implicated in child trafficking scrutiny in neighboring Uganda.

In the arrest warrant number 5696 dated 11 November 2022 and obtained by Sudans Post, police authorities ordered any police officer on duty to arrest and bring Wiir to investigation officer under case to answer charges against her.

“You are hereby directed to arrest the said person and bring him/her before the crime officer in charge of police station of Northern Division investigator 1st Lt. Moses Ismail Sadik,” the arrest warrant reads in part.

She is charged under section 245 and 289 of the South Sudan penal code act 2008.

Section 245 of the penal code prohibits threats against someone and those found to be violating that provision “shall be sentenced to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years or with a fine or with both.”

Section 289 provides prohibits defamation and those not complying are charged for defamation.

In September, Ugandan police investigated possible child trafficking in Kampala involving Wiir.

But the businesswoman denied any wrongdoing and said that the children under her mother’s custody were orphans whose families were killed by Misseriya Arabs militia during attacks in the disputed Abyei region.

“The babies are orphans of the deceased biological parents that had fallen victim to the Abyei Conflict,” Achai said at the time.
