CAIRO – South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit, his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and the President of Sudan Sovereign Council Abdel Fattah al-Burhan have been nominated for Nobel Peace Prize by the Federation of North African Parliaments following the signing of the Sudanese peace agreement in Juba, Egyptian media reported.

Under the mediation of President Salva Kiir, Sudanese government and a number of rebel groups signed a peace agreement on Monday paving way for end to the civil war in restive Darfur region and southern parts of the country.

That agreement also provides for the integration of rebel forces into the Sudanese armed forces.

The Cairo-based al-Masry al-Youm said member of Egyptian Parliament and speaker of the Federation of North African Parliaments Mustafa al-Jundi welcomed the signing of the Sudanese peace agreement in Juba and said Kiir, al-Sisi and al-Burhan deserve Nobel Peace Prize.

“The parliaments of North Africa nominate President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, President of South Sudan Silva Kiir, and the President of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, for the Nobel Peace Prize for their great efforts to bring peace in Sudan,” al-Jundi was quoted by al-Masry a Youm as saying.

“The parliaments of North Africa and the African Parliament have welcomed peaceful solutions to all problems and crises within the countries of the continent,” al-Jundi added praising the “victory by all parties to the agreement to end the armed conflict and achieve peace.”

It remains unclear what role did the Egyptian President played in the Sudanese peace process to deserve nomination for Nobel peace.
